Scope and Contents

The A. V. Shirk Political Collection consists of booklets, pamphlets, and other political materials produced in the 1940s-1970s (the bulk produced in the 1960s). These political printed materials were created for, about, and distributed by right-wing and left-wing organizations. Most of the materials were collected on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio.

This collection is minimally processed but it is available for research upon request.

Biographical / Historical

Albin Vineyard Shirk (known as A.V. Shirk) was born April 8, 1938. Shirk attended The Ohio State University in the late 1950s. Shirk pursued a career in photography working for the Ohio State Journal newspaper. After graduating, he worked at the Columbus-Citizen Journal newspaper as well as the Columbus Dispatch in the Classified Advertising Department. In the 1960s, Shirk became an assistant music programming director at WOSU-Radio, where he programmed music as well as produced a radio show in the early 1960s. During this time, he recorded folk and protest music around OSU, including in venues like Larry’s Bar and the Sacred Mushroom coffeehouse.
