Richard J. Wright marine collection

Collection Organization

As the founder the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes (formerly known as the Northwest Ohio-Great Lakes Research Center, then Institute for Great Lakes Research), Dr. Wright's personal materials relating to Great Lakes maritime history formed the core of what would eventually become the largest repository related to that subject matter. Notes, narratives, papers, and notes written by Wright are present, as are a wide range of like materials produced by others. Wright's correspondence and research inquiries offer insight into the development of the collection. Correspondence between other researchers and various libraries and archives is also present.

The largest series in the collection is manuscript material. It contains manuscripts, originals and photocopies of historical records, maps, research notes, corporate records, and government records. The largest part of this series is a set of 24 journals (Boxes 6-7) written from 1895-1918 by Charles B. Calder , who served in various managerial positions at Dry Dock Engine Works (Detroit), Detroit Shipbuilding Company, and Toledo Shipbuilding Company. Other large portions of this series include a set of marine newspaper scrapbooks compiled by Captain Frank E. Hamilton and Dr. Wright's Reading Files for 1977-1980.

Publications and Speeches, 1819-1989

 Series

This series contains a range of article drafts, papers, pamphlets, and other published materials. The largest component is a set of articles written by W.R. Hanna regarding maritime topics of the Lake Huron and Georgian Bay area. A few papers written by Dr. Wright are present. A wide variety of newspaper articles, essays, narratives round out the series.

 Series

This series contains a wide variety of original, photocopied, and transcripted materials produced and/or collected by Dr. Wright during his years of research on the Great Lakes region. The largest set of records is a series of 24 journals (Boxes 23-24) kept by Charles B. Calder from 1895-1918. At various times Calder served as a Chief Engineer, Superintendent of Dry Dock Engine Works, Superintendent of Detroit Shipbuilding Company, and General Manager of Toledo Shipbuilding Company. Another notable segment is five marine news scrapbooks compiled by Captain Frank E. Hamilton, who long served as master of the PUT-IN-BAY with service to the Lake Erie islands. Other materials include narratives, company records, notes, drawings, U.S. Customs records, U.S. Life-Saving Service records, and many others.
