Scope and Contents

The Papers contain material representative of Barbara Lockard Zimmerman's career during her time at Bowling Green State University. This includes documents and files, photographs, posters, programs, video recordings and scores. These materials document Zimmerman's involvement in Opera for Youth, the Black Swamp Players, a dinner theater series at the First United Methodist Church, and BGSU's College of Musical Arts.

Biographical / Historical

Barbara Lockard Zimmerman, born in 1934 in West Frankfort, Illinois, was an opera signer who joined BGSU's musical performance studies department in 1971. She became head of the voice department in 1980. Zimmerman received her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Indiana University, and took part in a USO-sponsored tour of Asia with the Belles of Indiana in 1959.

Zimmerman was president of the National Opera Association's Opera for Youth organization. In Bowling Green, she was active with the Black Swamp Players and directed dinner theater shows at a local church. She was known for her kind support for her students, and a memorial scholarship for vocalists at BGSU's College of Musical Arts was established in her name.
