Introduction | The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections in August 1989. The collection consists of constitutions, minutes, correspondence, reports, conference programs and files, subject files, publications and audio-visual materials, documenting the establishment of the NASSM and its growth and development. The files date from 1985 to the present. |
Agency History | In 1985, at a series of meetings held at the University of Windsor (Ontario) and Bowling Green State University (Ohio), the founders of this association met to discuss the merits, challenges, and logistics of forming a professional organization. From these discussions, the North American Society for Sport Management was created, and Kent State University (Ohio) was selected as the site of the first NASSM conference (1986). Attendees at the inaugural conference included 87 faculty members and students representing 29 universities in the United States and Canada, as well as a number of sport practitioners. Since those beginnings, NASSM has served thousands of members from several different countries and has established numerous international linkages with sport management colleagues and associations around the world. The purpose of the North American Society for Sport Management is to promote, stimulate, and encourage study, research, scholarly writing, and professional development in the area of sport management - both theoretical and applied aspects. NASSM is actively involved in supporting and assisting professionals working in the fields of sport, leisure and recreation. Topics of interest to NASSM members include sport marketing, future directions in management, employment perspectives, management competencies, leadership, sport and the law, personnel management, facility management, organizational structures, fund raising, and conflict resolution. NASSM’s official research journal is the Journal of Sport Management. More detailed information about the history of NASSM, its publications, and its conferences is available on the NASSM website. |
Biographical Sketch | The establishment of the NASSM archives at Bowling Green State University is due principally to the efforts of Beverly Zanger, NASSM’s Founding Secretary. Holding degrees from Ohio Northern University and BGSU, Zanger joined the BGSU women’s physical education faculty in 1968 and later was instrumental in establishing the sport management program at BGSU. She co-edited several textbooks and presented numerous professional papers at conferences. Beverly Zanger understood the need for the type of continued professional development and interaction that NASSM would provide. Moreover, she thought it was essential for professionals of the future to be aware of the origin and evolution of the association. Working with BGSU Archivist Ann Bowers, Zanger founded the NASSM Archives at the Center for Archival Collections in 1989. She served as NASSM’s first Archivist (1989-1996) and created the initial Operating Code for this position. Zanger retired from BGSU in 1996, after which she moved to Hawaii, where she lived until her passing in 2007. Subsequent NASSM Archivists have been Jacquelyn Cuneen, BGSU (1995-2000); Ray Schneider, BGSU (2000-2005); Artemis Apostolopoulou, BGSU, RMU (2005-2017); Lucy Lee, BGSU (2021-present). |
