|Title||MS 745 - BGSU Creative Writing Program BFA Theses, 1977-2017|
The Bachelor of Fine Arts theses were transferred to the Center for Archival Collections with the cooperation of the Creative Writing Program, Mary McGowan, Secretary, in August 1997. The collection consists of the English Department's bound copies of the theses written in fulfillment of the requirements for the BFA degree from 1977 forward. New theses are added periodically.
Literary and property rights are the same as those governing master's theses and doctoral dissertations. The collection was processed and register prepared by Lee N. McLaird, Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections, in October 1997. Updates have been made as new theses have been received.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing was established at Bowling Green State University in 1977. Inspired by the successful graduate program offering an MFA, undergraduate English majors who elect to earn a BFA follow a course of study focusing on creative writing through a workshop environment. Students submit a thesis in their senior year which is usually a collection of poetry, short stories, or a novel of their own composition. The program is administered through the Department of English.
|Scope and Content|
The Creative Writing program BFA theses cover work submitted by students and approved by their faculty advisors since the program's inception in 1977. Each thesis usually includes an introduction by the student, often discussing his or her progress through the program, development as a writer, special themes, and hopes for the current and for future work. The body of the thesis may be a collection of poetry, short stories, or a novel of the student's composition.
These theses are valuable as records of the work nurtured among undergraduates by the Creative Writing Program. They reflect the concerns and interests of young writers during the period covered. Through their introductory matter, researchers may gain some insight into the development of the BFA program and the interactions among the students and faculty in workshop settings.
