Introduction | The Sandusky Ohio Labor Council records were transferred to the Center for Archival Collections in June 1977 by Paul D. Yon, Associate Director of the Center for Archival Collections and Stephen P. Gietschier, Co-Director of the Ohio Labor History Project with the cooperation of Stanley Bennett, President of the Sandusky Ohio Labor Council. The collection is small, measuring approximately two-thirds linear foot and covering the years 1951 through 1964, and mainly documents the annual Labor Day Rally held in Sandusky and correspondence of the Council. Literary and property rights have been dedicated to the public and duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and scholarly research. The collection was processed by Joanne Passet, a graduate student employed by the Ohio Labor History Project. |
Agency History | Information on the history and development of the Sandusky Ohio Labor Council currently is not available. The Council's office is located at 1205 West Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio, 44870. Mr. Stanley Bennett was the President and J. P. Jackman was the Financial Secretary of the Council at the time this finding aid was prepared. |
Scope and Content | The Sandusky Ohio Labor Council collection documents only a few aspects of union activities during the years 1951 through 1964. The bulk of the records deal with the Labor Day Rally held annually in Sandusky. These records include the minutes (1952- 1959), correspondence (1951-1959), and financial statements (1953-1961) of the Labor Day Rally Committee, delegates credentials (1959), entertainment contracts (1953, 1955-1959), and news clippings (1952, 1953, 1956, n.d.). Another record series is the correspondence of the Sandusky Ohio Labor Council (1956-1964) which includes correspondence with Sandusky City officials, congressional representatives, other unions, state and national AFL-CIO offices. Financial ledgers (1955-1959) provide insight into per capita dues of member unions and receipts and expenditures of the Council. A very small set of handwritten minutes (May-October 1960) document the activities of the Council's Committee on Political Education (COPE) which mainly provided endorsements of political candidates. |
