| Introduction | The correspondence of the Charles Jacob Hartman family consists of .25 linear feet of family papers spanning the period from 1891-1977. It consists primarily of correspondence (1891-1960), with some family photographs dating between 1939 to 1977. The donation and transfer of these records to the Center for Archival Collections was arranged through the cooperation of Norm Bowers, Bradenton, FL, on Nov 3, 1995. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The register was completed by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in May 1996. |
| Biographical Sketch | The Hartman Family Papers consist primarily of correspondence between members of the family of Melissa Gardner and Daniel Vinton Hartman, particularly two of their children Charles Jacob Hartman and Mabel Clair Hartman Combs, ranging from 1891 through 1960. Daniel Vinton Hartman was one of the ten children of Samuel Hartman and Lucy Vinton, who eventually settled in Henry County, Ohio. Daniel's children included Charles, Gertrude, Emma, Harry, and Mabel. Gertrude married into the Kryder family, Emma married a LeRoy, and Mabel married a Combs. Charles Jacob Hartman, the primary correspondent in the collection, was born Apr. 6, 1869, his sister, Mabel Clair, was born Feb. 1, 1885. The Hartman family lived in Napoleon, Ohio, and Charles' letters to his sister, living in San Francisco, report on local activities and people. |
