| Introduction | The Charlotte Dunipace Shaw Papers consists of 0.6 linear feet of material of correspondence, research files, literary productions, photographs and book relating to the Dunipace and allied families. The donation and transfer of these records to the Center for Archival Collections was arranged through the cooperation of Charlotte Dunipace Shaw of Bowling Green, Ohio, in 1988. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection and duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The collection was processed by Stephen W. Badenhop, Archival Assistant, in October 2008. |
| Biographical Sketch | Charlotte Dunipace Shaw (1919-2008) was born on April 3, 1919, in Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio, to Elwin Dunipace and Gladys Gossard. Elwin Dunipace (1891-1972), was born on July 23, 1891, in Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio, to Robert Dunipace (1850-1916) and Lottie Householder (1857-1919), daughter of Louis and Martha Scott Householder. Robert died April 13, 1972, in Bowling Green. His father Robert, born on March 6, 1850, in Webster Township, was the son of Robert Dunipace (1809-1882) and Jane Muir (1820-1899), daughter of John and Mary Muir. Robert immigrated to the United States in 1834 from Scotland and settled in Perrysburg before settling in Webster Township in 1839. He was the son of William Dunipace (1780-1834) and Margaret Gill (1786-1878). Charlotte Dunipace Shaw graduated from Muskingum College in 1942 with a Bachelor’s Degree in music education. Charlotte worked as music instructor giving piano, organ and voice lessons. Her music background led to her being the organist for the former Scotch Ridge United Presbyterian and First Christian churches. She wrote a genealogy of the Dunipace family and published a book detailing the “Scots” in Scotch Ridge. Charlotte married Raymond Shaw and had two children: Gregory and Scott. She and Raymond divorced in 1953. Charlotte died on March 21, 2008, in Bowling Green. |

Researchers interested in Dunipace and allied families along with individuals exploring the history of Webster Township and Scotch Ridge would find these materials useful in their research, as the materials cover a very early period in Wood County, Ohio, history. The correspondence in the collection details the lives and experiences of various members of the Dunipace and Wight families from the 1830s to early 1900s. The letters discuss family and business related news. Research files in the collection give family genealogies and information and historical information about Scotch Ridge and the United Presbyterian Church in Scotch Ridge. Most fascinating is the travel journals of Robert Dunipace from 1832 and Christiann Thom from 1854 giving day-by-day accounts of their sea voyage from Scotland to United States. Also, included in the collection are copies of the estate papers from Alexander Wight and an assortment of financial documents from various members of the Dunipace family. Printed materials contain schoolbooks from the mid to late nineteenth century and a roster of Webster Township soldiers in the Civil War. Photographic materials include prints and negatives of various scenes from Scotch Ridge from the early twentieth century. |
