Contemporary materials are still being received. The collection covering more than 20 linear feet with dates ranging from 1946 to the present and includes minutes, membership and convention files, financial and printed material, photographic and audio-visual items. No restrictions exist on the research use of this collection and duplication is permitted for research purposes. The collection was arranged and described by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts, Center for Archival Collections in July 2013. |
Agency History | Ohio Speech-Language-Hearing Association was first organized in December of 1945, operating for many years under the name Ohio Speech and Language Association. It is associated with the American Speech and Hearing Association with a large membership base taken from the medical and educational fields The purpose of OSLHA is to exchange ideas and methods of procedures with regards to helping people with speech and hearing problems. OSLHA consists of two governing bodies, the Executive Council and the Legislative Council. These councils are made up of representatives from different Ohio districts. Along with several meetings throughout the year there is also an annual convention held in rotating districts. More background on the organization and its current activities can be found at their website at http://www.ohioslha.org/ |
Scope and Content | The collection of materials for OSLHA is diverse, covering more than 20 linear feet. The records range from proceedings to video/slide shows. The dates range from 1946-2012. The largest record group is the proceedings. The largest of this is the records from the Legislative Council meetings. The records begin in 1975 and continue through 2001 with a few later additions. This is also one of the richest record groups in that it gives a wealth of information about OSLHA. In each meeting there is information of all the committees as well as about OSLHA’s purposes and goals. Another strong record group is the Printed Material. In this group there are sets of OSHA Newsletter, OSHA Therapist, Communications Matter, and Hearsay. All of these publications discuss OSHA and the context in which it works throughout Ohio. The Legal Documents is another strong source of information. In this record group there is the OSLHA Constitution and amendments, as well as Ohio’s laws and standards. Membership records are numerous and give a demographical record of the members of OSLHA. Both correspondence and financial files are the least informative because they are scattered in years and scope. |
