Introduction | In 1987, a call went out to the ATHE membership for a place to store the Association archives. Dr. Allen Kepke, Chair of the Bowling Green State University Theatre Department conferred with CAC Director, Paul Yon, and Kepke offered the university's services. ATHE President Harold Nichols signed the Deed of Gift and the collection was sent to the CAC in a piecemeal fashion. Separately, Theatre as a Liberal Art (an ATHE Forum group) President Mark Heckler sought a repository for his group's records--Kepke again responded and the records were sent to BGSU. Unfortunately, because of the turnover in the term of office in the organization, less and less complete records were sent. In late August of 1992, ATHE President Gil Lazier appointed Brian Sajko Interim Archivist for ATHE and in October of 1992 the Board of Directors unanimously appointed Sajko as the founding Archivist of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. Sajko was a Ph.D. student in Theatre at BGSU and a student in Mr. Yon's Archives Administration class. As Sajko began organizing the collection, he realized that for the collection to be complete, the records of all the Forum groups should be gathered--a call went out to the membership. Many missing pieces of the collection were sought. The collection also contained many documents which referred to the transition from the defunct American Theatre Association subgroup the University/College Theatre Association to the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. The collection, then, begins with some of the records of the University/College Theatre Association in 1984 and continues with the transitional period to the formation of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education in 1986. Since it is still an "active" collection, with material still received on an occasional basis, the dates of material available varies. Types of records include publications, conference information, correspondence, legal documents, financial records, membership information, and minutes. These records focus on the final days of the university/College Theatre Association, the formation and current operation of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the records of the many Forum Groups associated with ATHE. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The collection was reprocessed to incorporate recent additions and register prepared by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in February 2005, based on earlier work done by Brian Sajko. Future additions will be similarly added to the collection and the finding aid adjusted accordingly. |
Scope and Content | The ATHE Collection incorporates material of three main groups: UCTA (University/College Theatre Association), ATHE, and ATHE Forum Groups. Using this approach, the researcher can study each independent group much as it operated and emerge with a detailed knowledge of theatre in higher education in America. The UCTA record group includes scattered materials especially pertinent to the transitional period from the defunct American Theatre Association to the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. It is included in this collection because of the tremendous overlap of officers and members from UCTA to ATHE. The transition period ranges primarily from 1984-1986. Much of the collection helps to explain the demise of the ATA from the perspective of the UCTA. This particular portion of the collection along with the founding documents of ATHE is a very detailed account of the establishment of a national professional organization. The ATHE record group focuses on the activities of the largest theatre organization devoted to educators of theatre in higher education. General subgroup descriptions focus on: proceedings, correspondence, subject files (including conferences, officer files, editorial files from publications, and material from committees, focus groups, and task forces), financial documents/records, and publications. The collection, then, represents the concerns of theatre in higher education in America. A Conference file exists for most national conferences; including the 1986 National Educational Theatre Conference and the first ATHE National Conference. The researcher should also study the correspondence files of the Vice president for Conferences in order to get a full knowledge of conference activities. Each of the Forum Groups is represented in the ATHE collection, thus affording the researcher the opportunity to thoroughly study specific areas such as directing or theatre history, for example, and their relationship to higher education in America. Some Forum Group records date back to the days of the ATA. Many Forum Groups represent multicultural and minority areas of theatre which may allow the researcher to undertake original culture studies. The Forum Group collection is small except for the Theatre as a Liberal Art subgroup. The organization of the Forum Groups in their own record group allows them to operate as independent" collections much in the same way that they operate under the ATHE umbrella. The Forum Groups record group is really the heart of the collection because it is the Forum Groups which operate ATHE. Each Forum Group, therefore, is organized in the same subgroups as the ATHE record group so that they function independently. As a note to the researcher, the American Theatre Association collection is housed at the New York Public Library. The five subgroups of ATA were; CTA (Children's Theatre Association), ESTA (Secondary School Theatre Association), ATAA (Army Theatre Arts Association), UCTA (University/College Theatre Association) and ACTA (American Community Theatre Association). Though no current groups should be thought of as stepchildren to ATA, some current groups have their roots in ATA, an organization which existed for nearly fifty years. These groups include: ATHE (Association for Theatre in Higher Education), AACT (American Association for Community Theatre), AATSE (American Association for Theatre in Secondary Schools), AATY (American Association of Theatre for Youth) and AATE (American Association for Theatre Educators). The collection organization is arranged by general record groups and is then placed in chronological order. Certain subgroups and series overlap because, as the organization has grown, officers' responsibilities have changed. For example, the vice President for publications and Research overlaps somewhat with ATHE publications including: Theatre Journal and Theatre Topics. An effort has also been made to separate financial statements and Treasurer's correspondence, yet some overlap exists. |
