Introduction | The National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections in May 1988. The collection consists of twenty linear feet of minutes, correspondence, committee and subject files, conference files, publications, honorary records, and regional records, dating from 1958 to 2011. The National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. (NACURH, Inc.) was formed in 1954, at the Midwest Dormitory Conference held at Iowa State University. First named the Association of College and University Residence Halls (ACURH), by 1961, it took on its current name and created two regional organizations within the national. In 1971, it incorporated in the State of Oklahoma and officially became NACURH, Inc. By 1997, NACURH, Inc. included eight regions and had organized into a tax-exempt corporation, allowing for investment of contingency funds to increase long-term financial stability. NACURH, Inc. is considered to be the largest student run organization in the world. It brings together over 400 schools from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Qatar. It supports National Residence Hall Honorary chapters at member schools and holds an annual conference. All officers, both national and regional, are students and the positions are filled through a bid process. NACURH, Inc. promotes living on campus as an integral part of the college experience, and strives to provide resources to help member schools create excellent residence hall experiences for their students. |
Series Description | The National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. collection is arranged into eight record groups: Administrative Files, Committee and Subject Files, Conferences, Correspondence, Inter-Association Files, National Residence Hall Honorary, Publications, and Regions. The Administrative Files contain organizational and legal documents, policy manuals and handbooks, annual and semi-annual meeting files, and corporate/annual reports. The annual and semi-annual meeting files may include minutes, reports, and correspondence. These records date from 1969 to 2005. The Committee and Subject Files include financial records, committee reports, surveys and minutes, and membership files. The committee reports and surveys provide valuable information on residence hall issues and policies. These records date from the 1960s through the 1990s. Conference Files may contain programs, final reports, newsletters, and correspondence regarding the NACURH annual conferences. The conference files date from 1958 to 2011, with a few scattered missing years. Correspondence includes the correspondence of the national advisor and the national chair, as well as other officers. The correspondence is arranged by date, although many files overlap in the time period covered. The correspondence dates from 1969 to 2000. The National Residence Hall Honorary Files document the organization, administration and activities of the national office and the various chapter honoraries. The national files date from 1967 to 2000 and the chapter files, which are arranged by the name of the chapter, largely date during the 1980s. Publications include membership directories, national newsletters, and the corporate magazine. Also included in this record group is the Resource File Index which provided access to the various resource files maintained by the national office. The publications holdings are very incomplete and date from the 1960s to 2007. The Regions include administrative records (minutes, reports, and agendas), conference files, correspondence, publications, and newsletters for each of the eight regional affiliates. The records date from the 1960s to 2008. |
