Introduction | The materials comprising the Dorothy Ringle papers date from 1862 to 1961. Included in the papers are the proceedings, membership records and correspondence of the Ohio Market Quota Protest Association and the United Farmers of America. Also included are the personal papers of Rolla M. Myers which contain legal correspondence, contracts, affidavits, patent papers and related materials, speeches, transcripts, photographs and other information depicting Myers' life from childhood to his death in 1961. The Dorothy Ringle papers were transferred to the Center for Archival Collections starting in 1977 continuing to the present. Jennifer Barner and Susan Hughes completed the processing and drafted the register in January of 1988. The collection comprises three and one half linear feet and accessibility to the collection is unrestricted. |
Biographical Sketch | Rolla M. Myers, road contractor and inventor, was born in Venice township, Seneca County, on November 14, 1889 to John Edward and Emma Lepard Myers. After graduation from high school in 1908, Myers received his teaching certificate. From 1914 to 1915, he was employed by the Highway Department, State of Ohio. Rolla Myers has had several inventions credited to him, including a stone spreader distributed in Canada and the United States. In 1917, he was granted a patent for his ground leveler or road building machine. Myers was active in the Ohio Market Quota Protest Association since its establishment in 1941, becoming Secretary - Treasurer in 1943. He was also active in the United Farmers of America and was a member of the Masons. On October 5, 1913, at the age of twenty-four, Myers was married to Nina Eckert and remained so until his death on June 13, 1961 at the age of seventy-one. |
Scope and Content | The core of the Dorothy Ringle Papers is the information they contain on the political activities of several farmer's groups from 1941 through 1959. The minutes, correspondence, membership lists, reports and other materials focus on Rolla M. Myers' activities in the United Farmers of America and the Ohio Market Quota Protest Association. The materials show the Association's concern over farm production quotas, tax laws and price regulations. Correspondence, reports and speeches are included from various fellow activists such as Congressman William Lemke, Henry Fackler, Arthur Booth, Tom Linder and C.C. Hanson. Correspondence, patent specifications and a blueprint for Myers' Stone Spreading Machine and Road Building Machine are included in the collection. Materials from Myers' early years, approximately 1891 to 1918, appear. School reports, assignments and a teaching certificate give some background information on Myers' life. Of particular note is a group of Civil War correspondence, dated 1862 through 1864, written by Leander Coe, of Co.D 123rd O.V.I., to his sister, as well as his diary. The letters describe moves, skirmishes and daily life in camp. A large number of photographs are of Rolla and his wife Nina Myers as well as family members, scenery and road construction using the Stone Spreader and Road Building Machine. Of interest to those researching farmers' associations is the collection's material on the Ohio Market Quota Protest Association and the United Farmers of America. These groups were especially active during World War II. |
