Biographical SketchThe Springboard Program started at Bowling Green State University in 1996 and continued until the program was eliminated in 2008. The program was founded by Milt Hakel, professor of psychology. It consisted of a graded, one-credit hour course where first-year students at Bowling Green State University were able to gain a competitive edge by learning about how to succeed in college. Upperclassmen would share experiences and knowledge they gained during their time on campus with students enrolled in the program. These upperclassmen were referred to as coaches, and each first-year student was paired with a coach who would act as their personal mentor. Faculty, staff, and community members also acted as volunteers. Some other skills the program taught were those focused on presentations, building resumes, interacting in group settings, and other skills that were considered vital for success at BGSU. Eleanor Ann (Ellie) McCreery served as the first director of Springboard.
