Introduction

The records of the Institute for the Study of Culture and Society include the applications of past fellows of the Institute, as well as some documentation regarding the operation of the Institute such as annual reports. The collection was donated to the University Archives in April 2017 by the Institute and was arranged and described by Assistant University Archivist Cindy Sauer.

Duplication of materials in this collection is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. As described in the Visiting Researcher Application Form, researchers using this collection assume full responsibility for conforming to the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright.

Agency History

The Institute for the Study of Culture & Society (ICS) was established in 1996 as a public humanities hub at Bowling Green State University. The aim of the ICS is to "encourage innovation in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, and to communicate the value and significance of that work to the wider public through public events and outreach efforts." Activities of the ICS include "support for faculty collaboration across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and serving as an incubator for innovative research and teaching." Scope and Content

These records document the work of the Institute from 1995-2012. Two series make up the collection: Fellows information and Administrative information.

Collection size: 4 full letter manuscript boxes and 1 half letter manuscript box. (1.48 cubic feet).

Series Description

The Fellows series forms the bulk of this collection, with the application packets originally submitted by Fellows prior to their selection. Most common record types for each Fellow includes the application, abstract and detailed description of their proposed project, a curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation. Also included frequently are flyers and other materials regarding the public presentation of their work. The materials are arranged alphabetically by Fellow last name. Materials for 2011-2012 fellows are in a separate group in box 4.

The Administrative series consists of two annual reports, published "working papers" from the Institute and lists of past Fellows.
