(See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.) Some text is in Latin and French. Researchers are also encouraged to refer to other area churches and missions such as Oregon and Oak Harbor. This register and this collection was prepared by Rachel Diegel in June 2002. *There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection. |
Agency History | The parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church began as a Station of Toussaint in 1881. In 1896, the care of the Station was transferred to Big Ditch. The Station began building their church building in 1912. It was completed in 1914. With the completion of the structure, the status of the Station was changed to a Mission. In 1918, the care of the Mission was transferred back to Toussaint. It remained a mission of Toussaint until 1930. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel received their first resident pastor in 1936. His name was Father Cyril Lauer. At this time Toussaint became a mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The church at Bono continued to grow while the members of Toussaint decreased. In 1944 the Toussaint mission closed due to the decreasing number of parishioners and the deteriorating condition of the church. Most of the parishioners joined Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The growth of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel was rapid and in 1964 they purchased land in order to build a bigger church. The church was completed in 1967. This church was destroyed by fire on December 11, 1976. The parish began building their present church in 1978 and it was completed in February of 1980. Mossing, Lawrence A. S.T.D.
