Introduction | The records of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church were first acquired for microfilming in 1997. This first group of records consisted of thirteen bound volumes. 1875-1898 mark the inclusive dates for Marriage and Death Records. First Communions and Confirmations date from 1876 to 1989, with some pre-1876 First Communion and Confirmation listed in the Baptismal Record Book of 1873-1919. The later records of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 1989 - 2002, were transferred for microfilming to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, in April 2002, with the cooperation of Father Regis Schlagheck of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. The records on this later roll are an update to the original filming. The collection consists of baptisms*, first communions, confirmations, marriages* and deaths. Due to inconsistencies in pagination and transcription of data, researchers are encouraged to refer to all volumes within each series. (See order of microfilming for a detailed list of these records.) This register and this collection was prepared by Rachel Diegel in April 2002. *There is a seventy (70) year access restriction on baptism and marriage records. No restrictions apply to the remainder of this collection. |
Agency History | The first record of Catholics in Carey was in 1853 and by 1864 two families and five single people made up the Catholic population in the village. The first church was started in 1868 and took almost two years to complete due to a lack of means. In 1877 the first school was built. It was small and was built into the back of the church. It wasn't until 1888 that the parish got its first resident pastor, Father Corneleius L. O'Brien. In 1890 Father John Mizer took possession of Carey. In 1901 the first church was moved to its present sight due to a need for a larger church. A new church building was started in 1907. It was nearly two years later that the basement chapel was ready for use. In 1955 a new school was completed and a second floor addition was made in 1961. Mossing, Lawrence A. S.T.D.
