Introduction | The Velda Johnston Collection consists of approximately 1 linear foot of manuscript materials. The collection was donated to the Browne Popular Culture Library by Velda Johnston in 1968. This collection is unprocessed, but may be accessed by contacting the BPCL reference email. The collection has no restrictions placed on its use for scholarly purposes. Researchers are responsible for securing copyright permission when using all unpublished manuscripts and published works found in this collection. |
Biographical Sketch | Velda Johnston Heslop (1912-1997) was writer of romance novels in the Gothic style. She also wrote under the pseudonym Veronica Jason. Born and raised in California, Johnston attended UCLA for Journalism. She later relocated to New York City with her husband, Robert Heslop. Her first novel Along a Dark Path was published in 1968, and she wrote more than 35 novels between then and 1991. Her novel A Howling in the Woods was made into a TV movie in 1971, starring Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman. |
Scope and Content | The Velda Johnston Collection includes manuscripts of three of the author's works. Typed manuscripts and galley proofs of the novels Along a Dark Path (1968), House Above Hollywood (1968), and A Howling in the Woods (1968) are included. These three novels are the first three published by Johnston, illustrating her early process. |
