Introduction | The records of Delta Delta, 1960 – 1993, were donated to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University in 1994 from Edward J. Janoch, a BGSU Delta Delta alumnus. The records of the professional fraternity consist of minutes, correspondence, invitations, publications, pamphlets, and a scrapbook. |
Agency History | On November 2, 1962, the Delta Delta Fraternity was founded on Bowling Green State University’s campus as a chapter of Beta Theta Pi, an internationally esteemed pioneering and leadership fraternity established in the United States. The Beta Theta Pi fraternity was formed August 8, 1839 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio as an entrepreneurially focused fraternity, ingraining lasting bonds between brothers, mutual assistance, intellectual growth, trust, responsible conduct, and integrity as its core values. Over a century later, the Beta Gamma Fraternity was introduced to the Bowling Green State University campus as a chapter of Beta Theta Pi in 1960. Two years later, Delta Delta was petitioned and officially established as a new campus chapter of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Since its formation, Delta Delta was primarily involved with Greek philanthropies, intramurals, campus fundraisers, and community service. The largest and most renowned original Greek tradition Delta Delta organized was the Beta 500 annual philanthropy, currently known as the Falcon 500. The yearly cart race around the Union Oval raises substantial funds for numerous charities, including the Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio, Children’s Resource Center, Wood County Senior Citizens Center, and Ohio Cancer Research Associates. The annual Falcon 500 continues its exciting and thoroughly engaging presence on campus since it began in May 1964. As of 2004, Delta Delta is no longer active on the BGSU campus. |
Scope and Content | The Delta Delta Collection offers a fairly complete picture of the fraternity’s campus history from the time of its organization in 1962 until Spring 1990. Researchers will notice a large gap in minutes between Fall 1970 and Winter 1975. Not all minutes follow the same semester timeframe in terms of organization. Secondly, some minutes’ are illegible with handwriting being difficult to decipher, especially in “Fall 1979 – Spring 1980.” A useful resource is a 74 page book titled Around the Union Oval: The BETA 500 at Bowling Green State University by Delta Delta alumnus Edward J. Janoch. Published in 1993, the book documents the detailed history of the campus’ traditional Beta 500 from May 1964 through April 1993. The book provides thorough information about annual races with dates, locations, times, weather conditions, participation, winners, second placers, crew, charities, facts and trivia, and program designs by year. The book serves as an exceedingly detailed record of the Beta 500 races and their history on campus. Miscellaneous Delta Delta letters, formal invitations, pamphlets, newsletters, and coupons are grouped and included in a separate folder. Separate from the folders is Edward J. Janoch’s scrapbook with photographs and news clippings collected from 1979 to 1983. |
