Talks about going to a sewing society and dating. October 16, 1848. Battle Fort, Illinois. From Cousin Nan to Martha. Disappointed not to receive letter from Martha; thinks she no longer likes her. Cousin James treats her like a brother would and he has filled the gap left by Martha. Refers to Martha's "making conquests" keeping her busy and advises her not to "sell yourself to [sic] cheaply." Discusses her nervous headaches and wanting some medicine. Describes the house she's living in , noting that they are in the basement until the rest is remodeled. Writes about attending Free Soil meetings, comments on their political songs and a banner made by "lady sewers." She will be going to school in December, and her friends have arranged for a boarding house that is not far from the school. Her health is good; the school has been torn apart by scarlet fever and measles, and there have been a great many deaths. Small pox has killed several people in Pottsville and she is worried that it will reach her town because several teachers have been exposed to it. Her father is buying a buzz saw and a horse to "make his fortune," although she has no faith in this. Says to write to Martha. February 26, 1849. Sandusky City, Ohio. From Frank Fuller to My Dear Friend (Martha) Urgently needs her help because he was unable to borrow money and asks her help in borrowing from two people. Needs to go to Cleveland in March, but can't afford it. Thanks her for her kindness the previous week. April 5, 1849. Huron, Ohio. From J. S. Cunningham to Martha Butman Asks to rent a stable at $.50 per week and a house and office for $1.75 per week. April 10, 1849. Buffalo, New York. From Mercuan to [Martha] Has found someone to take his house, so will be able to leave. Lists 17 scholars in Norwalk. Inquires about who wants guitars, which he prices at $12, $15, $20, and $25. April 22, 1849. Sandusky City, Ohio. From Frank A. Fuller to Martha. Comments on not hearing from her. Asks her to visit and mentions that he's staying at the home of Mr. Caldwell. April 29, 1849. Indian Territory, California Encampment, opposite St. Joseph. From Martin Smith to "Miss Martha" Discusses traveling by wagon train, including the breakdowns. He was offered $.50 per pound to take timber across the plains, but they were already loaded down, so he didn't. He feels healthier than when he's in Milan and there's no dust to trouble him. The men in his outfit complain about their skin getting too dark, get homesick, and leave. They will be at this place a few weeks, and they have nothing to do but explore. He has found fossilized specimens in a bluff. He could get a large amount for them, but he doesn't have room in his "truck." Has visited an Indian grave. He has written a detailed description of the graves and sent it to (Fraggones), giving him authorization to publish it. May 14, 1849. Sandusky, Ohio. From E. Merry to Martha. He searched their records per her request and found deed from Alex King to Elizabeth Waterman for land in Huron. June 17, 1849. Ashland, Ohio. From RCR (Rutherford) to Martha. Will no longer lecture, so has no reason to stay in the area. Discusses getting together with her for a trip. June 30, 1849. Detroit, Michigan. From R (Rutherford) to Friend (Martha) Asks her to come visit. He must talk because "the thing is somewhat mixed now." July 10, 1849. Detroit, Michigan. From R (Rutherford) to Martha. He is in Mackinaw and is going to Jackson on "cars." Hopes to see her there. September 13, 1849. Jackson, Michigan. From O. W. (Bennette) to M.B. Talks about her references to "little responsibilities," her children. He believes his friends are now laughing at him. Mentions her working with the sick. (Bennette) to Miss Martha. He finally heard from her after a long wait. Will go to Milan next Friday to see her. November 4, 1849. Waukegan, Illinois. From Nan to Cousin Martha. Received a letter from (Volney) who invited her to spend the winter, but she turned it down. Wanted to invite Martha to take the "old maid" position at an academy to teach girls manners. It is Martha's fault she's an old maid--that she could have married--and that "it's all for the best." She wants to visit Martha. Has done lots of sports including horseback riding and boating. Asks Martha to have Caroline write her, because she hasn't heard from her since spring. Worries that Caroline is getting homely because she's been telling James about her beauty and he'll be there in the spring. James has gone into business for himself with a partner, Mr. (Harvley). She is taking music lessons from Mrs. H., and she reminds her of Martha, except that she is not an old maid. She's formed a reading circle that meets once a week. They have "fine times advocating Woman's Rights," and they make speeches "just as the men do." There is a mixture of genders in the group. February 1, 1850. Waukegan, Illinois. From Nan Butman to Cousin Martha. Scolds her for not writing, asks her not to "forsake" her altogether because she wants her respect and approval. She turned nineteen last month and worries about dreams that she hopes aren't prophecy--being an old maid, because no one calls on her. Hopes to go to California a make a million so that she won't have to be an old maid; hopes that Martha won't engage any of her many admirers who "linger around your shrine." "California fever" prevails in her town, and many families have been left in destitute situations, but many people have returned wealthy. She would go to California if she were a man. She went sleighing for Christmas. She is getting along well with her music lessons. She and her family got a daguerreotype taken and Aunt wants to pay $5 for it, but she would rather give it to Martha. She asks Martha to get hers taken and send it to her so that she can kiss it twice a day. She will love it as much as anyone could. She asks Martha to write to her and to tell Henry how "handsome" she is and talks of sending him a Valentine. February 3, 1850. Jackson, Michigan. From O. W. (Bennette) to Martha. He wants to know identity of man Martha wrote was pursuing her. Martha had inquired about the doctor. He is fine. Sam is taking care of his mother, who got serious head injuries in an accident. Shoemaker is dating Becky who lives in Cincinnati. He describes a woman named Frank. He asks about Captain Atwood and a boat named "Arrow," which seems to be at risk of being taken off its route. He asks about friends and family in Milan. He heard she received an invitation to go to California and an invitation to travel in Europe with "a bachelor friend." February 20, 1850. Port Gibson, Ohio. From Friend Caroline to Cousin Martha. Chides her for not writing--her last letter was one year ago. She's a student who doesn't have a great deal of time for writing. She enjoys school but isn't as advanced as she would like to be. Lucy has thought about teaching next summer. Martha's old schoolmates in Port Gibson frequently inquire about her; gives marriage status reports on several. March 18, [1850]. Place? From O. W. (Bennette) to [Martha] Asks pardon for selfishness of letter. He's going East in the summer and would like to see her and Lucy. April 17, 1850. Jackson Michigan. From O. W. (Bennette) to [Martha] He went to Detroit and saw Lucy, but sorry he didn't see Martha. Talks about his trip on the "Arrow" from Detroit to Sandusky. He has a cold. May 3, 1850. Islander Hotel. From C (Rutherford?) To Martha (Martha is at the Exchange Hotel in Sandusky) Asks about her trip to the West. He's on board a steamer (not the "Arrow") that is headed up river towing the schooner "Puritan." Captain Glover and "his lady" are on board. Hopes to see Martha. Her life is important, and he compares her to a general leading an army to battle. He discusses her virtue and benevolence. He wanted to talk to her more last time he saw her but people were around. May 12, 1850. Jackson, Michigan. From O. W. B. (Bennette) to Martha. He is feeling melancholy and moody because of her. He is faithful in his interest of her and wants to be around her more. He feels differently around her. He knows how he feels about her but doesn't know how she feels about him, so he's leaving the rest up to her. No date (but after May 1850). Place? From ?? to Martha. Refers to a night they spent together and "did ---!" Martha claims to be truthful, but what she said that ? Night and on "the boat" varies from what she said in her letter. He refers to an old man who said he was after her money. He was unaware that she had any fortune, and that his financial state is probably equal to hers. He discusses her references to his dishonesty, and claims that he is honest with her, but dishonest with others. He will never see her again, and gives best wishes and hopes she has a long life of happiness with whoever she chooses. July 20, 1850. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From H. Halleck to Miss Butman Was requested by the widow of W. J. Totter to notify her of his death on April 3. August 13, 1850. Steam Boat Ontario, Oswego. From H. N. Throop to Connie Apologizes for its being two years since writing, but he hasn't heard from her in that time. Has he offended her? He will explain to her anything he wrote that bothered her. He has forgotten her first name and wonders if she's married or single. September 14, 1850. Fort Wayne, Indiana. From ? [seems like Rutherford's handwriting] to "Ma chere Martha" [Letter is not complete] He wants to see her, and feels a mysterious dread when he thinks of her. He sits alone often with his head in his hands, thinking of her. He got a trustee position with a church. October 6, 1850. Fort Wayne, Indiana. From R. (Rutherford) to Lucia. Why does he get no answers to his letters to Martha? Has she received them? He will fully answer Lucia's letter soon, but he is busy and will be leaving next week. December 11, 1850. Louisville, Kentucky. From R. C. R. (Rutherford) to Lucia. Asks her to write and fulfill a promise. He will be in New Albany, Pennsylvania for two to three weeks with the Supreme Judge of the state, then will return to Ohio. Sends his love to friends and asks "what has become of Martha?" January 27, 1851. Cincinnati, Ohio. From R. C. (Rutherford) to Lucia. Received her letter from Fairfield. His feelings will never change and is sorry she doesn't believe him. He's been preoccupied with another member of the family and will explain more later. He hasn't seen Julie and won't because she dislikes him. He will tell her what's going on when they meet because he doesn't want to put it in letter form. Plans to go north soon. June 9, 1851. Huron, Ohio. From Charles Sanderson to Miss Butman. He has received one or two applicants for the brick barn, and they are willing to price the house. He's occupied the office since April and will continue to do so until fall if that's all right with her. March 29, 1861. Cleveland, Ohio. From L. F. (Reed) to Martha. Went to Sandusky where Captain Atwood invited him to come to Cleveland. He is going to Wadsworth with Sue Mathers and is thinking of accompanying her to Milan. The "doctor" is losing many friends, and she did the right thing and her friends think so, too. He is very nervous which makes it difficult even to write. September 11, 1874. Chicago, Illinois. From Emma and Martha to Sister [Ida] Emma writes that she wants to visit, but can't leave Chicago because she and her mother don't have enough money. She is taking German and will write her next letter in German if Ida has studied it. She talks about Christmas and wanting to put up a tree. Martha writes that Ida shouldn't worry--they will get a letter from her in a few days. August 20, 1875. Saginaw, Michigan. From Ada to Sis [Ida]. A circus will be in town, which she wants to see. "Auntie" and her cousins Kittie and Helen just arrived. Helen is playing "Silver Bells" on the piano. Ada is making a winter school dress. Is mother letting father sell his land, and how is she doing? Thanks her for sending the Waterville paper. Wishes family were together. [Has a note dated February 24, 1925 on the top, from A. S. Fiske: "From my Precious Twin Sister Adah"] September 3, 1876. Benton Harbor, Michigan. From Emma to Sister [Ida] Mother will be coming to Ohio and will bring Ada home with her. Tell Caroline Parks to get patented the gum that she washes trees with, because anyone could take it to a chemist and discover the ingredients and proportions. The weather is great but she is depressed. Wishes they were together because Ida would make her feel better. Wants Caroline to send mother a model (of ?) So that she can get a correct idea for sales. November 15, 1880. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma Butman to Cousin Sill. Isn't working but plans to go to St. Paul to work at the office of Judge Bryant and live with him and his wife. She wants to study Hebrew and Latin and plans to study the Hebrew scriptures to see if there was a mistake that woman was made from man's rib. She hopes to realize her fondest dreams of being an old maid. Asks for a picture. May 8, 1881. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma to Cousin Sill. Hasn't heard from her. Asks her to send the "school singer" she left behind. Ada is visiting Waterville and will return home in July. Mother is talking of a camping expedition in July and August to do geological exploration and recreation. They will have both men and women on the trip, including a few professors. She wants to travel, but doesn't have the money. Ada thanks her for the curtains. January 31, 1882. St. Paul, Minnesota. From Em (Emma Butman) to Sister [Ida]. Went to the Burns Banquet in Precious Minneapolis with a Mr. Hall. Robert Burns spoke and read poetry. Two hundred fifty of the finest citizens attended and they spoke of the poets and poetry of Scotland. Discusses the satin dress she wore and a new fan she bought. She danced waltzes and promenades. April 18, 1883. San Francisco, California. From Emma to Precious Sister [Ida]. She hasn't heard from her. She's glad they went to San Francisco because mother wasn't "well situated." Says her own health is improving. Mother wants Ida in San Francisco for the summer. May 18, 1883. San Francisco, California. From Emma to Cousin Sill, Aunty & Uncle Phelps. She's been in San Francisco for two months. It is beautiful, and she understands why her mother doesn't want to return East. The costs are about equal to those in Chicago, although food is higher; gives prices of butter and eggs and talks about the cost of mutton and vegetables. Discusses the size and buildings of San Francisco. Gardens and grounds are always in bloom. She went to Golden Gate Park and saw the ocean, which is so much more impressive than the Great Lakes. The city is surrounded by hills that were considered useless until recently, when cable cars were introduced, so buildings are going up now. She hasn't yet seen the sights, including the Chinese quarter. Will be returning to Chicago in September and thinks her mother will return with her because she's been sick. ?/1884. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma to Aunty. The case (perhaps John Seneca Brown's will) is to be tried in the Supreme Court November 7. If they win, she will return to Chicago and return to her studies. October 24, 1884. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma to Cousin Sill. Talks about the case and having to take it to Probate if they don't succeed at the Supreme Court level. Wants to return to Chicago to teach and attend law school. Wants her to buy and send the language book they used in school. No date. Place? From Emma to Dearest Sister. She didn't get a position in night school, so is spending four hours each day studying. Went to a Philosophical Society and heard essays, music and had discussions. Hard work is ahead if she finishes her law courses in the fall, but she enjoys it, and will be ready to practice in the spring. Needs her white silk gloves. Tell mother that Mrs. Judy Wait, a classmate of hers in law school, has a daughter who is practicing medicine. She will be getting a new coat and will send her old cloak and buffalo to her mother. Helps her two hours per day, spends four hours in school and expects to be teaching in the evenings. Is glad mother enjoyed the buffalo--wants to know how it looks. Is thinking of sending mother medicine; wonders how she is doing. Asks her to send flannel shirt, shorthand books, and rubber ruler. August 14, 1889. Kendall's Inlet, Lake of the Woods, Ontario. From Ida to Mother (Martha) She arrived last night and is a guest of Mrs. Kendall, staying in a log cabin that is divided into four units. She arrived with miners who had supplies and enough lumber to build a house. She wishes mother were there, and she will stay one week. [On the top is a note: "written by Ida Brown (my mother) A. S."] October 5, 1889. Hopkins, Minnesota. From Ida V. Brown to Rev. Mr. Fiske. [typed copy] Thanks him for the bird's eye view of Worthington. Liquor and other "curses" would be removed if women had the "right of suffrage." His brother came by the past week with a horse and took her to school. Her mother was with her today, then went on a train to meet Mrs. Hall (Ida's sister), who will pass through St. Paul on her way to Washington. Had to give up trip because of a sprained ankle. From Edward Fiske to Dear Sister [Harriet?] [Copy of a typed piece] Discussion of Cooper's and Parkman's works on Indians, comparing the differences between the two. Refers to tribal customs that she had asked about, specifically concerning medicine men, religion, dances and battles. He wishes he lived in Beloit to be with her. Rhoda will probably be in Beloit for Thanksgiving and will be looking for a college. Talks about the government stance that "the only good Indian is a dead Indian." It costs the government $1,000 for every Indian it kills. The way to make a "good Indian" is through "Carlisle Schools." Discusses differences in languages, habits and customs of tribes. Discusses the role of Grandfather Seth Brown in the development of Milan, Ohio, and gives family genealogy. Hopes to see her before winter. No date. Place? From R. C. to ? [Letter fragment] He will take lecture course next week. P. Will leave state as soon as this is finished. The town is dull. Walked three miles for exercise, felt better because of it. [Letter fragment] Wants to know of a place to stay for two-three months--will work for board--would do sewing. Is not homesick, but wants to see Milan one last time. Xeroxes of papers: April 12, 1851. Castilia, Erie County, Ohio. From G. W. Lucas to Madam (Martha Butman) He is a stranger who admired Martha's reply to Dr. Rutherford in a Sandusky newspaper. Mentions gossip about this event, which has reached even Lucas, who was just traveling through the area. Uses very flowery language to describe how much he admires her. He is a 50 year old lecturer and writer of church music from Boston who was passing through Ohio after a visit to see "the Great West." [Letter is followed by a typed transcription of the same letter by Ruth Colburn.] 1846. [copy, very light, difficult to read] Financial receipt of Martha Butman for work by attorneys. May 23, 1846. R. moved from San Francisco to San Diego, then sailed to Newport, Oregon to be the superintendent of the Oregon and Pacific Railroad. He is far from his father, who suffers a great deal from a cancer sore on the back of his neck. The doctor advised a tincture of cocaine to soothe the sore. She is taking music lessons from Mrs. H., and she reminds her of Martha, except that she is not an old maid. She's formed a reading circle that meets once a week. They have "fine times advocating Woman's Rights," and they make speeches "just as the men do." There is a mixture of genders in the group.

February 1, 1850. Waukegan, Illinois. From Nan Butman to Cousin Martha.
Scolds her for not writing, asks her not to "forsake" her altogether because she wants her respect and approval. She turned nineteen last month and worries about dreams that she hopes aren't prophecy--being an old maid, because no one calls on her. Hopes to go to California a make a million so that she won't have to be an old maid; hopes that Martha won't engage any of her many admirers who "linger around your shrine." "California fever" prevails in her town, and many families have been left in destitute situations, but many people have returned wealthy. She would go to California if she were a man. She went sleighing for Christmas. She is getting along well with her music lessons. She and her family got a daguerreotype taken and Aunt wants to pay $5 for it, but she would rather give it to Martha. She asks Martha to get hers taken and send it to her so that she can kiss it twice a day. She will love it as much as anyone could. She asks Martha to write to her and to tell Henry how "handsome" she is and talks of sending him a Valentine.

February 3, 1850. Jackson, Michigan. From O. W. (Bennette) to Martha.
He wants to know identity of man Martha wrote was pursuing her. Martha had inquired about the doctor. He is fine. Sam is taking care of his mother, who got serious head injuries in an accident. Shoemaker is dating Becky who lives in Cincinnati. He describes a woman named Frank. He asks about Captain Atwood and a boat named "Arrow," which seems to be at risk of being taken off its route. He asks about friends and family in Milan. He heard she received an invitation to go to California and an invitation to travel in Europe with "a bachelor friend."

February 20, 1850. Port Gibson, Ohio. From Friend Caroline to Cousin Martha.
Chides her for not writing--her last letter was one year ago. She's a student who doesn't have a great deal of time for writing. She enjoys school but isn't as advanced as she would like to be. Lucy has thought about teaching next summer. Martha's old schoolmates in Port Gibson frequently inquire about her; gives marriage status reports on several.

March 18, [1850]. Place? From O. W. (Bennette) to [Martha]
Asks pardon for selfishness of letter. He's going East in the summer and would like to see her and Lucy.

April 17, 1850. Jackson Michigan. From O. W. (Bennette) to [Martha]
He went to Detroit and saw Lucy, but sorry he didn't see Martha. Talks about his trip on the "Arrow" from Detroit to Sandusky. He has a cold.

May 3, 1850. Islander Hotel. From C (Rutherford?) To Martha (Martha is at the Exchange Hotel in Sandusky)
Asks about her trip to the West. He's on board a steamer (not the "Arrow") that is headed up river towing the schooner "Puritan." Captain Glover and "his lady" are on board. Hopes to see Martha. Her life is important, and he compares her to a general leading an army to battle. He discusses her virtue and benevolence. He wanted to talk to her more last time he saw her but people were around.

May 12, 1850. Jackson, Michigan. From O. W. B. (Bennette) to Martha.
He is feeling melancholy and moody because of her. He is faithful in his interest of her and wants to be around her more. He feels differently around her. He knows how he feels about her but doesn't know how she feels about him, so he's leaving the rest up to her.

No date (but after May 1850). Place? From ?? to Martha.
Refers to a night they spent together and "did ---!" Martha claims to be truthful, but what she said that ? Night and on "the boat" varies from what she said in her letter. He refers to an old man who said he was after her money. He was unaware that she had any fortune, and that his financial state is probably equal to hers. He discusses her references to his dishonesty, and claims that he is honest with her, but dishonest with others. He will never see her again, and gives best wishes and hopes she has a long life of happiness with whoever she chooses.

July 20, 1850. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From H. Halleck to Miss Butman
Was requested by the widow of W. J. Totter to notify her of his death on April 3.

August 13, 1850. Steam Boat Ontario, Oswego. From H. N. Throop to Connie
Apologizes for its being two years since writing, but he hasn't heard from her in that time. Has he offended her? He will explain to her anything he wrote that bothered her. He has forgotten her first name and wonders if she's married or single.

September 14, 1850. Fort Wayne, Indiana. From ? [seems like Rutherford's handwriting] to "Ma chere Martha" [Letter is not complete]
He wants to see her, and feels a mysterious dread when he thinks of her. He sits alone often with his head in his hands, thinking of her. He got a trustee position with a church.

October 6, 1850. Fort Wayne, Indiana. From R. (Rutherford) to Lucia.
Why does he get no answers to his letters to Martha? Has she received them? He will fully answer Lucia's letter soon, but he is busy and will be leaving next week.

December 11, 1850. Louisville, Kentucky. From R. C. R. (Rutherford) to Lucia.
Asks her to write and fulfill a promise. He will be in New Albany, Pennsylvania for two to three weeks with the Supreme Judge of the state, then will return to Ohio. Sends his love to friends and asks "what has become of Martha?"

January 27, 1851. Cincinnati, Ohio. From R. C. (Rutherford) to Lucia.
Received her letter from Fairfield. His feelings will never change and is sorry she doesn't believe him. He's been preoccupied with another member of the family and will explain more later. He hasn't seen Julie and won't because she dislikes him. He will tell her what's going on when they meet because he doesn't want to put it in letter form. Plans to go north soon.

June 9, 1851. Huron, Ohio. From Charles Sanderson to Miss Butman.
He has received one or two applicants for the brick barn, and they are willing to price the house. He's occupied the office since April and will continue to do so until fall if that's all right with her.

March 29, 1861. Cleveland, Ohio. From L. F. (Reed) to Martha.
Went to Sandusky where Captain Atwood invited him to come to Cleveland. He is going to Wadsworth with Sue Mathers and is thinking of accompanying her to Milan. The "doctor" is losing many friends, and she did the right thing and her friends think so, too. He is very nervous which makes it difficult even to write.

September 11, 1874. Chicago, Illinois. From Emma and Martha to Sister [Ida]
Emma writes that she wants to visit, but can't leave Chicago because she and her mother don't have enough money. She is taking German and will write her next letter in German if Ida has studied it. She talks about Christmas and wanting to put up a tree. Martha writes that Ida shouldn't worry--they will get a letter from her in a few days.

August 20, 1875. Saginaw, Michigan. From Ada to Sis [Ida].
A circus will be in town, which she wants to see. "Auntie" and her cousins Kittie and Helen just arrived. Helen is playing "Silver Bells" on the piano. Ada is making a winter school dress. Is mother letting father sell his land, and how is she doing? Thanks her for sending the Waterville paper. Wishes family were together. [Has a note dated February 24, 1925 on the top, from A. S. Fiske: "From my Precious Twin Sister Adah"]

September 3, 1876. Benton Harbor, Michigan. From Emma to Sister [Ida]
Mother will be coming to Ohio and will bring Ada home with her. Tell Caroline Parks to get patented the gum that she washes trees with, because anyone could take it to a chemist and discover the ingredients and proportions. The weather is great but she is depressed. Wishes they were together because Ida would make her feel better. Wants Caroline to send mother a model (of ?) So that she can get a correct idea for sales.

November 15, 1880. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma Butman to Cousin Sill.
Isn't working but plans to go to St. Paul to work at the office of Judge Bryant and live with him and his wife. She wants to study Hebrew and Latin and plans to study the Hebrew scriptures to see if there was a mistake that woman was made from man's rib. She hopes to realize her fondest dreams of being an old maid. Asks for a picture.

May 8, 1881. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma to Cousin Sill.
Hasn't heard from her. Asks her to send the "school singer" she left behind. Ada is visiting Waterville and will return home in July. Mother is talking of a camping expedition in July and August to do geological exploration and recreation. They will have both men and women on the trip, including a few professors. She wants to travel, but doesn't have the money. Ada thanks her for the curtains.

January 31, 1882. St. Paul, Minnesota. From Em (Emma Butman) to Sister [Ida].
Went to the Burns Banquet in Precious Minneapolis with a Mr. Hall. Robert Burns spoke and read poetry. Two hundred fifty of the finest citizens attended and they spoke of the poets and poetry of Scotland. Discusses the satin dress she wore and a new fan she bought. She danced waltzes and promenades.

April 18, 1883. San Francisco, California. From Emma to Precious Sister [Ida].
She hasn't heard from her. She's glad they went to San Francisco because mother wasn't "well situated." Says her own health is improving. Mother wants Ida in San Francisco for the summer.

May 18, 1883. San Francisco, California. From Emma to Cousin Sill, Aunty & Uncle Phelps.
She's been in San Francisco for two months. It is beautiful, and she understands why her mother doesn't want to return East. The costs are about equal to those in Chicago, although food is higher; gives prices of butter and eggs and talks about the cost of mutton and vegetables. Discusses the size and buildings of San Francisco. Gardens and grounds are always in bloom. She went to Golden Gate Park and saw the ocean, which is so much more impressive than the Great Lakes. The city is surrounded by hills that were considered useless until recently, when cable cars were introduced, so buildings are going up now. She hasn't yet seen the sights, including the Chinese quarter. Will be returning to Chicago in September and thinks her mother will return with her because she's been sick.

The case (perhaps John Seneca Brown's will) is to be tried in the Supreme Court November 7. If they win, she will return to Chicago and return to her studies.

October 24, 1884. Waterville, Minnesota. From Emma to Cousin Sill.
Talks about the case and having to take it to Probate if they don't succeed at the Supreme Court level. Wants to return to Chicago to teach and attend law school. Wants her to buy and send the language book they used in school.

She didn't get a position in night school, so is spending four hours each day studying. Went to a Philosophical Society and heard essays, music and had discussions. Hard work is ahead if she finishes her law courses in the fall, but she enjoys it, and will be ready to practice in the spring. Needs her white silk gloves. Tell mother that Mrs. Judy Wait, a classmate of hers in law school, has a daughter who is practicing medicine. She will be getting a new coat and will send her old cloak and buffalo to her mother.

Has reentered law college and is working in the office of a Mrs. Sampkins, who does legal publishing and advertising. Helps her two hours per day, spends four hours in school and expects to be teaching in the evenings. Is glad mother enjoyed the buffalo--wants to know how it looks. Is thinking of sending mother medicine; wonders how she is doing. Asks her to send flannel shirt, shorthand books, and rubber ruler.

August 14, 1889. Kendall's Inlet, Lake of the Woods, Ontario. From Ida to Mother (Martha)
She arrived last night and is a guest of Mrs. Kendall, staying in a log cabin that is divided into four units. She arrived with miners who had supplies and enough lumber to build a house. She wishes mother were there, and she will stay one week. [On the top is a note: "written by Ida Brown (my mother) A. S."]

October 5, 1889. Hopkins, Minnesota. From Ida V. Brown to Rev. Mr. Fiske. [typed copy]
Thanks him for the bird's eye view of Worthington. Liquor and other "curses" would be removed if women had the "right of suffrage." His brother came by the past week with a horse and took her to school. Her mother was with her today, then went on a train to meet Mrs. Hall (Ida's sister), who will pass through St. Paul on her way to Washington. Had to give up trip because of a sprained ankle. August 7, 1893. Newport, Rhode Island. From George Brown to Mrs. Fiske [Ida].
Is visiting his mother, who is 90 years old. Attended church and heard the same minister who preached when he was a child. Went for an ocean drive. Will be visiting Providence, Philadelphia, and Chicago before returning to St. Paul. [Letter is on Northern Pacific Railroad Company Accounting Department stationery (St. Paul) and includes names of departmental staff.]

Discussion of Cooper's and Parkman's works on Indians, comparing the differences between the two. Refers to tribal customs that she had asked about, specifically concerning medicine men, religion, dances and battles. He wishes he lived in Beloit to be with her. Rhoda will probably be in Beloit for Thanksgiving and will be looking for a college. Talks about the government stance that "the only good Indian is a dead Indian." It costs the government $1,000 for every Indian it kills. The way to make a "good Indian" is through "Carlisle Schools." Discusses differences in languages, habits and customs of tribes. Gives phonetic spellings, definitions of the Ojibway language. Compares area tribes. [Attachment entitled, "Some Glimpses into Indian Traits"]

September 11, 1937. Milan, Ohio. From Mumsie [Ida] to Sinclair and Adah. [Copy of handwriting]
Tells them where to find pearls, then ends with a postscript saying she has found them. She visited their Monroesville home and got the family Bible, which she will be sending parcel post to Abbie at Eagle Rock. Her uncle designed the home. Gives background information about the development of Monroesville.

September 16, 1937. Milan, Ohio. From Grandmother Fiske [Ida] to Darling Claire.
Discusses the role of Grandfather Seth Brown in the development of Milan, Ohio, and gives family genealogy. Hopes to see her before winter.

He will take lecture course next week. P. Will leave state as soon as this is finished. The town is dull. Walked three miles for exercise, felt better because of it. Butternuts, apples and plums are plentiful. Wants to lecture at church on physiology.

He is a stranger who admired Martha's reply to Dr. Rutherford in a Sandusky newspaper. Mentions gossip about this event, which has reached even Lucas, who was just traveling through the area. Uses very flowery language to describe how much he admires her. He is a 50 year old lecturer and writer of church music from Boston who was passing through Ohio after a visit to see "the Great West." [Letter is followed by a typed transcription of the same letter by Ruth Colburn.]

R. moved from San Francisco to San Diego, then sailed to Newport, Oregon to be the superintendent of the Oregon and Pacific Railroad. He is far from his father, who suffers a great deal from a cancer sore on the back of his neck. The doctor advised a tincture of cocaine to soothe the sore. [Handwritten on this: To Sir, from Martha, July 26, 1887, mentioning that the letter belongs to the Brown Estate.]
