Introduction | The Vance Family Papers consists of over 13 linear feet of correspondence, subject files, photographs, books, and artifacts relating to three generations of the Vance Family, originally from the Findlay, Ohio area. The donation and transfer of these records to the Center for Archival Collections was arranged beginning in 2011 through the cooperation of Alexander Rudewicz of Leesburg, Florida, who had been a favorite student of Wilson Beall Vance and had been bequeathed the family papers in Vance’s will. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. The register was completed by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts in June 2014. |
Biographical Sketch | The family groups represented in this collection cover members of three generations of the Vance Family of Wilson Joshua Vance, Louis Joseph Vance, and Wilson Beall Vance. Each generation is represented by a separate section of the whole collection. Wilson Joshua Vance, the son of Joseph C. and Melinda Baldwin Vance, was born on December 20, 1845 in Findlay, Ohio. In August 1861, lying about his age four months short of his 16th birthday, he enlisted as a private in Co.B, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Co.D in May of 1862. At the Battle of Stones River on Dec. 31, 1862, shortly after he turned 17, he distinguished himself under fire by rescuing a comrade during the battle, for which action he was later awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor. After the war, he married, Rachel E. Johnston on Sep 4, 1867 in Miami County, Ohio with whom he had children Henry C., Mary B. and Rachel Elizabeth Johnston Vance. His wife was born May 14, 1846 in Upper Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. Rachel died Jun 13, 1873, shortly after childbirth. He married again on May 31, 1877 in Washington, D.C. to Lillian Bell Beall Lyons, daughter of Louis D. and Isabella Frey Beal. She was born in June of 1855 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. They had one child together, Louis Joseph Vance. Wilson died November 10, 1911 in Chattanooga, TN having fallen ill after attending a reunion of the Army of the Cumberland there. Lillian died in December 15, 1925; both were buried in Arlington National Cemetery. During his career Wilson worked as a newspaper editor and publisher in Piqua, Ohio around 1870, and later as a Clerk in the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In 1899 he wrote a novel, “God’s War” based on his Civil War experiences with the 21st O.V.I. He wrote a few more books, and also collaborated with John Phillip Sousa by writing the librettos for two comic operas for which Sousa wrote the scores. Louis Joseph Vance, the son and only child of Wilson Joshua and Lillian Beall Vance, was born on September 19, 1879 in Washington, D.C. Educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, he was a writer known for popular fiction, particularly as the creator of the character of Michael Lanyard and the “Lone Wolf” series of detective novels, and for motion picture adaptations of many of his works. He married on February 19, 1898 to Anne Elizabeth Hodges (appearing in letters as “Nan”) in Manhattan, New York. She was born May 24, 1879 in New York City to John and Urcilla Dyer Hodges. Louis died alone under mysterious circumstances on December 16, 1933 after a fire in his New York City apartment; Anne died April 7, 1947 in Rockwell, Connecticut after a 3 year fight with breast cancer. Her sister, Amy Hodges, was married to Kyle A. Vandergrift (Howard Kyle), both of whom appear in miscellaneous correspondence. Wilson Beall Vance, son of Louis Joseph and Anne Elizabeth Hodges Vance, was born February 16, 1900 in New York, New York. He studied in Vienna, Austria (1923) and lived there, working as editor of the English language Vienna Herald until the 1930s. Later he was a writer for the Hartford Courant and a professor at the University of Hartford. He was married twice, first to Rosalind Simonds, and later to Emma “Faith” Ritter, but had no children from either marriage. In later years he began using the name Yandray Wilson Vance, which is what is inscribed on his tombstone. He died November 24, 1988 in Hartford, Connecticut. Howard Kyle was born Kyle Vandergrift on April 22, 1861 in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. Beginning his amateur stage career under his birth name, he switched to his stage name at the age of 23 when he made his professional stage debut. He was active on stage and the lecture circuit from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. He also was a founding member of the Actors’ Equity Association, serving as the first secretary of the organization. However, after a disagreement with their direction after affiliation with the American Federation of Labor, Kyle left and became associated with the rival Actors’ Fidelity League in 1919. As a member of the theatrical Players’ Club, in 1914 Kyle was on the committee responsible for a statue honoring the actor Edwin Booth, who was one of the founders of the Club in New York. He was married in 1915 to Amy Hodges, sister of Anne Elizabeth Vance, wife of Louis Joseph Vance. Kyle died December 1, 1950 in New York. |
Scope and Content | The Vance Family Papers consist of separate groups of correspondence, personal papers, photographs, literary productions, and artifacts related to three generations of a prolific and significant literary family. Wilson Vance was a Civil War hero and author, his son Louis Joseph Vance, an author of popular fiction including the “Lone Wolf” series, and Wilson Beall Vance was an academic and writer for the Hartford Courant. The heart of the Wilson Joshua Vance papers relate to his service with the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and his literary career afterward. Of particular note is the inclusion of the Congressional Medal of Honor that Vance was awarded for his actions at the Battle of Stones River in late 1862, bequeathed to the donor of this collection. The collection includes a copy of his novel “God’s War”, other minor books, and the librettos of two comic operas written by Wilson J. Vance, with music by John Phillip Sousa. There are also subject files associated with family history/genealogy and photographic prints. The papers of Wilson’s son Louis Joseph Vance contain some personal correspondence to family members including his mother, Lillian, his wife, Nan, and a few to Louis from Rosalind Simonds (and her mother), first wife of his son, Wilson Beall Vance. The core of his correspondence with his son, Wilson Beall Vance is located in the section with his son’s material. There is, however, correspondence related to Louis Joseph Vance and his literary contacts, including letters with other authors, publishers, and critics, such as Anna Marie Wilhelmina Stirling, Arthur Hutchinson, William F. DeMorgan, and Grant Richards. In addition, the business related correspondence includes agreements and statements associated with his publishing interests and also material related to the silent movies produced based on his books. Of particular note in this group is some minor correspondence in 1916 with William Randolph Hearst regarding the serial “Patria”. One unique group of materials in this part of the collection is a grouping of still photos from several of the silent films based on Louis Joseph Vance’s novels, including “The Trey O’Hearts”, “The Spanish Jade”, and “Day of Days” and the Terrence O’Rourke serials. Although some of the images have appeared in various “lost films” books, many of these do not seem to appear elsewhere. The final main grouping in the papers are those connected with Wilson Beall “Yandray” Vance. Correspondence between Wilson Beall Vance and his father Louis Joseph Vance is an interesting glimpse into the tensions between the father and son, with rancorous exchanges related to Beall’s career path and his decision to stay in Europe, even when he was failing economically. There was also animosity associated with Beall’s first marriage to Rosalind Simonds, including a grouping of letters located in Louis Joseph’s section of the papers as well as a retrospective examination of the failed marriage in the miscellaneous section of Beall’s papers. Other minor correspondence is connected with his grandmother, Lillian, his mother, Nan, and some associated with his second wife, Faith. Another portion of Beall’s papers deals with his role as Executor of his father’s estate, containing legal correspondence covering publishing agreements, royalty statements, film and publishing rights, copyright registrations, and general legal correspondence. The miscellaneous cultural material, associated with Wilson Beall Vance from his period living in Europe, highlights performers, artists, writers and poets that he encountered in his capacity as editor of the Vienna Herald. In the case of folk musician Glikeria Taiga and sculptor Gustinus Ambrosi there is fairly extensive material including correspondence, although much of that is in German. The other smaller groups include photographs from the Vienna Herald period including Ludwig Schwab portraits, a folder on Ivan Narodny, and material on poet Adrienne Sarold, and puppeteer Richard Teschner. The Glikeria Taiga Fleicher material is the largest of these groups in the collection because Wilson Beall Vance was a supporter of her career while he was living in Vienna, served as a translator of her literary work, and as an impresario to promote her artistic endeavors, even after he returned to the United States. Since the material consists primarily of drafts of letters written by Beall as well as a variety of incoming correspondence, in a mix of German, French, and English, with a few photos and promotional items, the contents are only minimally accessible. A selection of her artwork and photos are in the collection, some in the oversize boxes. Gustinus Ambrosi is another example of Beall’s connection in supporting the culture developing in Europe between the World Wars. After visiting Ambrosi’s Vienna studio in 1931 and writing an article in the English language Vienna Herald, Beall was a steadfast enthusiast and was in periodic correspondence with the sculptor. Much of the correspondence is in German. The final grouping of material is associated with the actor Howard Kyle, included in the collection due to his relationship with Louis Joseph Vance, having married Amy Urcilla Hodges, the sister of Louis Vance’s wife Anne Elizabeth “Nan”. Born Howard Anderson Vandergrift, in his early amateur acting career he used the name Kyle Vandergrift, and he used that name in private life and blended it to Howard Kyle for his later career. The correspondence in the collection signed by Amy is Amy Vandergrift, his wife and the aunt of Wilson Beall Vance. Because of Kyle’s broad range of activity in the theatre, initially with Actors’ Equity, and later with the rival Actors’ Fidelity League, with the Players’ Club, and other activities, there are a wide variety of correspondents in the collection. For example, as a member of the Players’ Club (founded by Edwin Booth) Kyle was on the Selection Committee for the Edwin Booth Memorial in New York around 1914, there is a minor amount of correspondence related to that activity among with other Players’ correspondence. Some correspondence has been grouped by notable individuals such as Otis Skinner, Christopher Morley, Burns Mantle, Charles Coburn, G.C.D. O’Dell, Clara Clemens Gabrilowitsch, and Booth Tarkington, but most of the general correspondence is just arranged chronologically. His collection also includes clippings, playbills, programs, photographs, and a typescript reminiscence. |
