Introduction | The Rev. Carl Althoff Papers, Northwest Ohio, MS 790 was loaned to the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, with the cooperation of Gerald Althoff of Fenton, Michigan, in August 1999. Gerald Althoff is the grandson of Rev. Althoff. Carl Heinrich Althoff (2 Feb. 1856 - 25 June 1944) was ordained a minister in the Lutheran Church at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elmore, Ohio, in 1875. During his years in the ministry, Rev. Althoff pastored several area churches, including Trinity Lutheran in Elmore; Salem (Four Mile) and St. Paul's Lutheran, both near Fremont, Ohio; Emmanuel Lutheran in Hessville, Ohio; and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jenera, Ohio. He also performed various ceremonies at several other churches in Northwest Ohio. This collection contains four sermon books and three record books compiled by Rev. Althoff during his years of service. Three sermon books are dated 1876-1877; the fourth is undated. The three books dated 1876-1877 are written entirely in German; the undated book contains one sermon written in English, with the rest written in German. The three record books include one personal record book of births, one personal record book of both confirmations (including sponsors) and marriages, and one personal record book of deaths (including the funeral texts). These three record books range collectively from 1876-1939, and are written almost entirely in German. Annotations by Gerald Althoff appear occasionally throughout the volumes. This register was prepared in August 1999 by John McWatters. No restrictions apply to the use of this collection. |
