Introduction | The David K. Bowers Papers consist of materials related to the military service of David Bowker during the Civil War. The collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections on August 15, 2011 by Susan E. Carlucci. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication may be permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. This register was completed by undergraduate student assistant Emily Schoenlein in May 2013, with revisions by Marilyn Levinson, Curator of Manuscripts. |
Biographical Sketch | David K. Bowker was born on December 2, 1838 to Samuel and Nancy Bowker in Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio. The family moved to Texas in Henry County, Ohio between 1850 and 1860. David served in Company K of the 14th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He received a commission as a First Lieutenant on November 18, 1864 and Captain on April 20, 1865. He also served as Quartermaster. After the Civil War, David worked as a shoemaker and married Jemimah Powell on June 25, 1873. He became the mayor of Liberty Center until his death on December 14, 1897. |
Scope and Content | The David K. Bowker Papers consist of items related to David Bowker’s military service during the Civil War. Included in the collection are general and military correspondence; military records such as promotions, inventory records, and receipts for clothing and equipage; personal legal documents including his marriage certificate; and newspaper clippings such as Bowker’s obituary. |
