May 2, 1944May 2, 1944 May 2, 1944 Dear Mom, Can't think of what to write about but will attempt to get a letter off. Was working the other day and I backed my watch into an electric fan. Just chiped the corner of the mystle but want to get it fixed right away. Received the fishing tackle Bill sent. Will come in mighty handy when we hit a place with nothing to do. Was sitting around the boat last Sunday and Alex Lind brought John Holden over to see me. Am planning to visit him tomorrow night. I mean John. One of the chiefs just brought one of "Sixpences" pups back aboard. He's just a handful of fur. First time I've seen one of them since they were born Maxine Wank sent me a box of candy. Seems as though I haven't received so many letters lately. Would rather receive a letter than packages any time. Listening to the radio again. Wouldn't know what I'd do without one. Fred surely must be busy. About all for now. Robert Allan Carter TM 3/C P.S. Forgot to mention get paid tomorrow drawing $85.00. Will send a money order for $75.00. May 3, 1944May 3, 1944 Dear Mom, Received your letter of April 25th. First regular letter I've received in over a week. Didn't realize I'd written so few letter after just getting in. Have done better the last week. Regarding sending cookies + fudge thought I'd answered you several times. It isn't that I don't appreciate them but save your sugar because I can always buy candy bars and too the mail service is very crowded these days. It isn't very practical for you to send toilet articles because I can get some things cheaper. These ones you sent before happened to come when very badly needed. No your letters aren't censored. Received the Easter papers. I believe April 8th. Don't keep track of days but it was very close to Easter Received another packet of papers. April 29th: It doesn't matter if you send addresses but of course as you say those 90 FPO Frisco aren't any help in locating anyone. Wouldn't have much use for a sweater besides we have waterproof jackets. Have "Deacon" painted on mine. Will let you know if I ever think of something you could make me. Don't worry about me forgetting about home because Im just passing time until I get back and see whether I'll make a farmer or not. 1130 PM so will close. Pretty late for me. Usually have been getting to bed around 9 or 10. Robert Allan Carter TM 3/C May 4, 1944May 4, 1944 Dear Mom, Not very much to write about now. Have been very busy the last few days. More work to come for awhile. Just received your Vmails of April 26 & 27. Regarding coconuts, could buy some if I wanted to but prefer them in wintertime. It always seemed that when I chewed coconuts when out in the cold they warmed me up. Will tell you [caret mark] all about Dorothea & Fred Angus when I get home. Its a sad story to me and there isn't much to tell. Had planned to visit John Holden last evening but was to busy. May get another chance later. Have sent several letters free because I ran out of air mail. Hereafter when I come in I'll send a cablegram then both [caret] of us can send all our letters air mail and I don't mean Vmail. Don't think because I wrote this that I'm pulling out, will be around for awhile yet. In fact hoping to receive the oboe. Have answered your questions but can't think of much else of interest so will close. Bob P.S. Borrowed this air mail so wouldn't be so long coming. May 10, 1944May 10, 1944 Dear Mom, Am pretty sleepy so don't expect to much. Will also answer Dorothaes letter here. Have the same trouble with Vmail as you do. Will use them for post cards. Can get all the Vmail blanks and stationary I want free. My letter of the 20th was returned by the censor of the rest camp. Don't know why. Maybe it just got thrown in the wrong pile. The other boys don't ordinarily receive packages so don't think your slighting me Am going to see Alex Lind again to tell him of Stretch Kisabeth; Alex asked if I knew of his whereabouts. Don't know what a Faehiusthoscope is for sure. Anyway we don't have one aboard. Is it the gadget you look through at two different pictures to make on complete picture. Haven't received Ted Shirlands address Dorothae must have misunderstood me. My address doesn't have to be on the letter. Wanted the envelope addresses printed for clearness. Regarding Dorothaes dinner Dec 30 she forgot to mention which year. The only song you mentioned that I've heard is "Morsey Dootes." Have heard several state radio programs this time though. Hope your Mothers day greeting arrive at the proper time. Am enclosing several pictures taken while on leave. Three of us got together to take them. Just got weighed and have gained 10 lbs in the last three months. Now weigh 135 lbs. Am mailing $79.00 tomorrow; haven't the money order yet. All for now will try + get at least one more interesting letter off. That will mean several uninteresting letters. Robert Allan Carter The Herring is a funny ship Did I say sails? did I forget? Who is this ship to contridick That butter comes from buttercups One night while I was counting sheep
May 11, 1944 Dear Mom, Received your letter of May 5th today. Haven't much to write about so will probably just get your questions answered. Received all the books and newspapers you mentioned and have read them all. Have also received the fishing tackle and it will come in handy. Sorry I mentioned sending the oboe thought Jim still had the other one to play. Have liberty every third day since being back on the boat. Only went to town once to see a movie since then, don't expect to go again. Had planned liberty one day but was to busy to go. Just as well, wouldn't have been able to send a $70.00 money order. Am anxious for the day when I have $1,000.00 in the bank and $1000.00 purchase price of war bonds. Don't know why, probably won't do me any good, guess its just the idea of being able to say Im worth $2,000. Have never received letters from Clyde or Leslie. Thought Dorothae said Leslie was going to write. What house on Walnut street did Jim buy? When I get the address will probably know which house it is. About all for now have a 10 to 12 watch so will close P.S. Just noticed I wrote April instead of May, maybe I've done it on my last few letters. Don't keep much track of the days.
May 14, 1944 Dear Mom, Hope you are well and had an extra pleasant day today. Just finished brewing some coffee on our private coffee maker. Beleive I told you we got a silen for the forward room. Haven't received a letter from Hitch as yet. Will be to occupied to get any letters off next week but will try and get at least several off at the following week. Same old story nothing to write about except to say hello and I'm fine. May go on liberty tomorrow just to get away from the boat for a change. If I do, found a place can get oboe reeds and will get some. Won't be able to pick them up every place. About all for now
May 19, 1944 Dear Mom, Just got off watch and thought I'd better drop a line while I could. Have a slight head cold, nothing much. Guess I got it from getting a haircut yesterday. Haven't had one for over a month. The knife and the oboe should be in next time I get back suppose. Have given up expecting it now. Hope you receive the pictures ok, also the placers & napkins. Just got some new phonograph records aboard, supplied by the Navy. They are large ones of radio programs, 15 minutes to a side. Could have gotten paid $50 the other but left it on the books, will probably have a nice tidy sum to draw next pay day. 0010 May 20th. Being late will close for now. |
