April 9, 1944Robert Allan Carter TM 3/C Dear Mom, In port and starting a two weeks vacation at a very exclusive hotel. Four boys to a room with shower. Am running through all your letters to answer any questions. That picture of the boat was taken by the navy and that company made them up to sell to us if we wanted them. Haven't seen the show "Destination Tokio" yet. Can buy all the newest magazines or anything I want when in port. Received the books which you sent. Where I am now there are regular cities. There's a book store on the corner from where I stay. I didn't know that boat you mentioned that was sunk. Regarding Christmas dinner, it was started in the afternoon below, but our section had to relieve the watch and when we ate we surfaced. Received a letter from Canfield recently, he is now aboard the submarine [redacted, presumably by Navy censor]. I guess that covers most of the questions. Received your Easter card Good Friday. Your clipping is the only case I ever knew of services being held on a sub. There may be some boats that hold them but I don't know of any. Tell Jim I could use one of those knives he made and would like one very much. Most of the boys have them. Am enclosing $100.00 MOD to be banked. Hereafter you better bank the large seems I send home, someone might need it and it would be a lot of trouble getting bonds refunded. Keep on buying a bond a month though. Got paid $185.00 but since Im in a city again thought I'd have plenty on hand at least. Will get repaid again so will mail all of that pay + what I don't use of the $85.00. Fox the last two months on board ship we received short news reports. The last statement on all of them is "All of our aircraft returned safely. About all for now tired of doing nothing.
April 21, 1944 Dear Mom, Forgot to enclose the MOD in my letter yesterday so here it is. This will make $180.00 Ive sent this stop. Received your letter of April 12th today Also received a card from Jill and Mrs Mottram. Regarding Elizabeth Anns letter, wrote it on her birthday + it was mailed at a port we stoped at before coming here. Sounds like Warren has a pretty good job. Glad to hear he has a good set up. Hope it lasts. Got some clothes to wash so will close. Do them in a bathtub. Robert Allan Carter TM 3/C
R.A. Carter TM 3/C April 23, 1944 Dear Mom, Not much to write about. This is the last day of rest camp. Just got back from seeing "Destination Tokio." Didn't care for it at all. Easter day was my first full day of vacation so spent it looking the place over. The only thing that was like the Easter I know was that there were plenty of flowers. Have already written what Christmas was like. Want to confirm that I have sent two money orders at different times. One for $100.00 and one for $80.00. You'll see I did my usual trick of forgetting to enclose the one in the letter I meant to send it in. Will be busy hereafter until we move but will get a few letters off to you at least.
April 26, 1944 Dear Mom, Received your two page letter of April 14, this noon. Am staying back on the boat. Have one more day of torpedo shool. Just have four days of it. Ran into Alex Lind yesterday while going to chow. He's the first guy I've met from Fostoria since leaving the States. Did Bill smash his fingers seriously? Took it that he didn't at least hope it wasn't serious. Has Bill been fishing this year yet? Afraid I think of it as summer back there because its fairly nice here. Tell AnnaBell to tell Mr Beeman (sp) if she sees him again I was disappointed to hear he moved away. One of the little things I was looking forward to when I got another leave was to get a haircut from him. Haven't had any like he gave me since I've been gone. Read "The return to Religion" which you sent me while on vacation. Much to my surprise it interested me very much. Got some new symphonic records aboard. Am playing them through now while I'm writing. Don' know if I told you but that's what I did during most of my visits at Dan + Mary Volkmars. Just sat around playing their records. If it hadn't been for Dan I wouldn't have seen any of New York. Feel ashamed of the fact that I didn't have the nerve on energy to entertain myself and cause Dan + Mary to be imposed upon. Surely like to hear all Dorothaes music. About all for now so will close. Robert Allan Carter TM 3/C P.S. Have Jim mail me an oboe and several reeds if he don't mind. Would prefer the one with the smaller case unless it is the better or he prefers it. (Hope he still has it). If he does send one; enclose my collection of music. What I'm referring to is a folder which I kept my study books and music sheet music in. Used to keep it in the bottom drawer of the large bureau. Jim may have it now. Forget this P.S. if you think it to risky.
April 28, 1944 Dear Mom, Just received your letter of April 20. Just read in the paper [caret mark] about Sec. Knox. Can't think of much to write about. Back to work on the boat again today but don't have much to do. Have my second class course in now (grade 3.67). All I have to do now is study and work hard and maybe I'll be second class when I get my next leave home. It doesn't matter if my name is on a personal article. After all, all my clothes are stenciled. Well you asked what you could send me so I gave you a big order. Hope you can fill it. If you send it probably won't receive it right away. Hate to think of waiting till the next time we come in. Just happened to think, see about mailing an oboe airmail maybe I'll get it right away. In case you do send it air mail or otherwise take the money from the bank. Will probably cost quite a bit to send. Listening to the records on the radio again tonight and have started to read "U.S. Foreign Policy." Boy its hot down in the boat. Isn't bad sleeping though because I sleep right below a ventilation pipe and get a nice air conditioned breeze. All I can think of for now. |
