January 10, 1944Jan. 10, 1944 Dear Mom, Hope you are well and getting along alright. Received sixty one letters and four packages and can't think of a thing to write about. The fudge tasted very good although is was a little dried but, not hard - considering it was two & a half months old. The cookies were also good. The box of odds & ends proved to be the needed things many boys received similar boxes. Have read all letters received in the order they were stacked & now have yours in date order so I'll run through & answer all questions so I won't leave any. Haven't hear of the book "c/o Postmaster" & as yet read "The Robe" Have received only the one letter from Ken Canfield Have met several torpedo school mates - but no one from home. You might send M.C. Morrisons address some Sea Bees around. Didn't receive your V mail in time to read John 3 - 10 but had plenty of Christmas Carols and [caret mark] read from the Bible. Never saw any explosion like the picture you sent of a Jap ship. Don't know when I will if ever. The sinking of Jap ships seems to be the only news we hear of although did hear that Roosevelt & Churchill had a conference. Getting all the news now though. Was flat broke of course didn't matter aboard till I found five pennies. had them for two months then lost them. Got paid $185.00 yesterday & collected $90.00 from everybody that owes me so will mail $250.00 home. Was going to put it in the letter but the Post Office was closed. However you can expect it, will mail it tomorrow. Leave it to your judgement what to do with it, you'll probably need it in these times. Am also sending a little booklet which they advised us to send home. Any semblance between what its about and what happens to me is purely accidental. At present am just taking it easy. Spend my time writing, listening to radio, pitching horse shoes & baseball. Went swimming in the ocean but the air & ocean is pretty cool. I may go ocean fishing, they have gear we may borrow and the Navy runs excursions for groups of five boys when weather permits. They also have archery and several sail boats for personel to use. Spent my first pay on a pair of shoes. Had to resew the soles on my only old pair till I could get a new pair. Chow time & is getting dark so will finish this in the morning. 0950 Jan 11, Just got back from the Post Office & from getting a hair cut. Got the money order so am enclosing it in this letter. Am a qualified sub. man now but would have made TM 3/c if I had gotten qualified three days earlier. Misunderstood the dead line but it was because Im backward that I didn't qualify earlier. Had to study the boat & take an oral exam to become qualified. About all for now will close by & write a complete letter at the next sitting. Bob January 16, 1944Robert Allan Carter S 1/C Dear Mom, Hope you are well and getting along ok. Am still living a life of ease on my vacation. Received the Sub Song and a V letter from Dorothae yesterday. Haven't figured out how it goes as yet, frankly it sounds to dreary with just down, down, down, repeated all the time. I think most of the sub men have never heard of it. Have mailed $250.00 home so let me know when you get it. We may get paid next week again so if we do will mail another money order. Can't think of much to write about, none write to everybody so please thank Uncle John + Aunt Carie, Ray and Anna Mr + Mrs RC Nichols LeRoy + AnnaRose for their Christmas cards. Also Rev. Wood, Edna + Mrs Longacre, Mrs + Mrs H.O. Purkey for birthday cards. I give up trying to write everybody because it takes me two hours for a letter like this. Have been swimming some more and taking long walks to look the place over. About covered it all. Some of the things I've seen I remember of them being in the Natl. Geographic. That reminds me the map that Bill gave me is fast getting worn out. All the guys in my compartment have been looking at it. All I can think of for now. Robert Allan Carter S 1/C
Robert Allan Carter S 1/C Dear Mom, Not anything to write about but wanted to mail some money home. Got paid $45.00 yesterday and still had enough to get along so mailed it all. Guess Im getting a little sense, Since I've gotten all my money back that I loaned, I've refused to loan any more. Of course since I'm mailing this don't have any to lend. All for now.
Robert Allan Carter S 1/C Dear Mom, Not much doing, just got back form a movie. Two in a row in fact. Have read several books very recently. Don't read for a long time then read several. As for the packages, I've received the pencil from Jim + Wilda several months ago, the box of cookies, and box of fudge, and box of miscealaneous gear. All these Ive mentioned before in other letters. The other day while at the cottage the yeoman said I had three packages on the boat so I came down to see. Found the package of newspapers only, so asked the yeoman later about it. Guess one of the relief crewmen cleaning the boat decided they were his. Would have at least liked to have known who they were from. My pen had been working very good then it started blotting once in a while. Just found the point wasn't clear in Besides receiving your three page letter of Jan 18 received two Vmails from Dorothae (Jan 12+13). Didn't expect to but got around to answering Rey + Anna. They sent a Vmail with a line from Elizabeth + George T, Paul + Nadine, + Nelly + Charlotte written Christmas Hereafter when you confirm the receiving of a money order state the amount so I'll know which one and throw away the stub. I believe I mentioned I received the sub. song. Figured it out on a piano last week. Isn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's late so will close. Have to get up early tomorrow.
Robert Allan Carter S 1/C Dear Mom, Sunday afternoon and am taking it easy. Went swimming for a short time, and the rest of the time have been reading and listening to the radio. That's nice that Warren can be at his parents house for six weeks. Received your two Vmails of Jan 18th today but not the straight letter. I may have received it the other day and failed to note the date. Not much to write about. My vacation is over so have been working the last week. Today was just extra not having to turn to.
