March 3, 1863March the 3 1863 My Dear Wife I have set my self down to rite a few lines to let you now that I am well and I hope thas few lines will find my dear the sam but my dear beloved wife you wanted me to rite a letter to your brother and sister and i have don so and I have rote one as well as i cold for i have to hold the paper in my hand and I cant not rite a good letter so but my dear I want you to finsh that letter and tel them that I don the best I can the shape that i am in laxington but we doant no how long we do shal stay hear but my dear i hope we shal go back to our old camp a gain but my dear thear ant no plas that i like so well as i do that for it looks like hom for we have bean thear so long but I had rather be a long with you my loving wife and you must tel them that I cold not rite eny more for I did not have time for we are hear to day and gon to morrow and it is very un sierten wear we be for it is very cold this morning and som snow my Dear beloved Wife you must exquse me for not ritin eny more in this letter for it is so cold that it all most frose my hand so i must close my letter by wiching my dear wife well and that is all this time this is from your well wiching husbon Stephen Burton so good morning to my dear may god bleash you to and me to day and for ever more ... .... it will be hard to read March 24, 1863March the 24 tuesdy 1863 My Dear Wife I have once more taken my pen in hand to rite a few lines to my love to let her no that I am well at present and I hope thes few lines will find my dear the same but my dear beloved wife I am sorrey to tel you cince I rote you the last time I have bean trobbled with that nasty cof and cold a gain for the cof hurts me the worst for I cant take but a little sleape with it for I dont want you to feal bad a bout it for I shant di with it but my love if you hant sent that box a way will you please to send me something for my cof and wat I dont use one time I can put by but now i will commence a gain my dear be loved wife I recived your kind letter last eving mondy and I was so glad to hear my love was well my dear you need not think that i shal get mad be cause you told me to kiss a woman I no you did not menet my love but my dear beloved wife I hope we shal stay hear now til you can com hear or til we can com hom for good and that will suite me the best my love but I am a fraid it will be a good wile yet my dear but my dear beloved wife I am sorrey to tel you what has hapned hear last saturdy thear a one of the men plaing ball as well as eny man cold be and to day he was carred to his grave he was from mediner I dont now his name he goes som times with the base drom my dear wife I dont care wat you rite to me so I can hear from you to or three times a weake for we dont get quite so much time to rite now as we have don be fore we have to go to work every day bilden up brest workes a round the town to keep the rebbles out from it if we can and I think that is all this time so thear is no more from your well wiching husbon Stephen Burton the one ho loves you so dear so good morning my love ma god bleach you and and me to day and for ever more amen that is all I have got time to rite now for I want it go out this morning. April 1, 1863April the 25) 1863 saturdy My Dear beloved Wife I have taken my pen in hand once more to rite a few lines to you hope to find my dear quite well as it leaves me at present but my dear wife I have bean waiting all this weake to get a letter from you but non com yet but I think you must rote be fore now and it must be on the road but a long time a comming to me but my dear be loved wife I do hope you ant sick my love I hant got a letter from you cince you told me you had got that monney but I gess thear nothing rong it will all com a round all right after a time but I hope my dear beloved wife be fore you get this letter the war will be all over then I can com hom to my sweat dear wife but I cant take no comfort at all if I dont rite to you if you dont rite to me but I may get one to morrow moring bean Sunday but my dear beloved wife god bleack your dear hart I hardly no wat to rite now for I have rote so much but I must tel you that Johney has bean quite sick with his nack for to or three days but he has got little better now and I am very glad he has got better for I do not want eny of the boys to be sick hear for it is a hard place for a sick man to be but my sweat dear wife I do think we shal all be at hom be fore the summer is out for thay keep fiting now every day but the Kentucky folkes say that thay cant hold out but a little longer and I hope it will com trew my loving wife but I hope god will spare our swet life til we can meat meat a gain soner or later for the weather is good and warm hear to day but I cant tel how long it will last as it is as and I hope thaes few lines will find my dear beloved wife quite well to for we have bean on the march ever cence last saturdy after noon and we all have had sore feat but we are a getin over it a gain but my dear beloved wife I must tel you that we have a crost cumberland river now and I had a drinke of water out of it for the [at bottom of page] first time but I cant tel how meny more times I shal but I think now we are a goin to put this thing rite throw but my dear beloved wife I dont want to make my love feal bad for wat I have rote in this letter my dear sweat little wife but I must
