Benjamin B. Jackson

Benjamin B. Jackson was born near Clarksburg, West Va. Feb 26, 1821, and departed this life Aug. 11, 1902, aged 81 years. In 1828 he moved with his parent to Warren in state. He was married Elizabeth Jane Champion of Clermont county in 1840, and to them were born eleven children, five of who are still living, Andrew C of Tiffin, O, Martha C. Banks and Stephen O., living near Cecil, O., Wm. B. of Paulding, and Sarah L. Hanschild of Ritzville, Washington.

In 1848 Mr. Jackson moved to this county, settling in Crane township, in what was then almost wilderness, and by hard labor, cleared and fenced two farms or about one hundred and seventy acres. Besides his farm work he filled many office of trust; was Justice of the Peace four terms, township clerk, trustee and assessor each a number of terms; satisfactorily performed the duties of guardian and as administrator of numerous estates, and was decennial land appraiser in 1880. He always encouraged and took an active part in public improvements and in advancing and promoting the public welfare. Was very conscienscious and strictly honorable in all his doings. Prior to middle age he assisted in many literary societies and lyceums and taught singing schools. Fraternally, at the age of 25 he was a charter member of F. & AM lodge Warren county, and later was a charter member of the first lodge organized in Defiance, and still later, a charter member of Antwerp lodge, of which he remained an honored member and regular attendant as long as health would permit.

Deceased also bore an honored part in the great civil war, serving with the 14th O.V.I and participated in some of the greatest battles and most stirring campaigns. In early youth he united with the M.E. church and remained a consistent member unto the end. His aged helpmate, who shared his happiness and grief for sixty-two years, still survives him.

Funeral services were held at Bethel church, Aug. 13, Rev. Pomeroy of Antwerp officiating. Interment in Forder cemetery.

Another Pioneer Gone

Benj. B. Jackson one of the Most Respected Citizens of Crane Township, Answers the Last Roll Call

On last Monday, Benjamin B. Jackson who has been a resident of Paulding county since 1848, died at the home of his son S.O. Jackson in Crane township. Mr. Jackson was born in Western Virginian February 26, 1821 and at the time of his death was 81 years, 5 months and 16 days of age. He was married to Miss Elizabeth J. Champion of Clermont county, Ohio, in 1840 and to them have been born eleven children, five of who are still living. The are Wm. B. of this city, Andrew O, of Tiffin, Sarah, the wife of Theodore W. Hanschild, of Washington State, Stephen O., and Martha O. Banks. In answer to his country's call, he enlisted on the 26th day of August 1861, and was assigned to the third division of the Fourteenth army corps, being sent to Kentucky. He took part in the battles of Missouri Ridge, participated in skirmishes at Wild Cat and Mill Springs under Gen. Thomas, was with Sherman in his march to the sea and for four months was fighting continually. Fraternally, he is a Master Mason in good standing and a member of Antwerp lodge. The funeral services were held in Bethel church, near the Forder bridge yesterday morning at 10 o'clock and interment in the cemetery near by.
