	Annie R. Stuart Diary - 1861 July 1861 Monday, July 1, 1861 Rather cold for the season. Had quite a little rain. Sewed on my dress. Tuesday, July 2, 1861 Sewed. Went to school. Had 50 schollars. No trouble. Stopped at the office. No letters for this child. Came home. Read some in the daybook. Sewed. Finished reading Praise and Principle. Good. Frank _____ came out all right. Wednesday, July 3, 1861 Fine morning. Had school. Finished my dress. Was in to see Bill. Had a letter from Rob. Wrote one to him at night. Thursday, July 4, 1861 Had an invitation to go to the picnic. Helped on the bridge. Promised to go. Had kind of a school. Went to the woods. Had a nice little time singing. Went to the _____ with _____. 4 of us in one buggy. Had a pleasant time. Big crowd there. Dr. Liners took me a riding in the afternoon. Had a pleasant time. Took supper in the _____. Had a great time coming home. Did not seem to care. Friday, July 5, 1861 Did not get up very early. Felt rather bad. Got up. Ate a little breakfast. Laid down again till school time. Mollie went to bed sick. Got two letters. One from Daniel, the other from Annie. Saturday, July 6, 1861 Very dry and hot. Every person wishing for rain. Went to singing. Good many there. Nothing important. Sunday, July 7, 1861 Read some. Went to ____ church. Heard Mr. Good preach. Had dinner. 3 PM hear Culler preach here in town. 5 PM went to barn meeting with Maggie. had to laugh while the preacher was preaching to see _____ _____ perform. Eve. George, Add, Mollie and I went to Mr. Failors to see the sick. Monday, July 8, 1861 No rain yet. Wrote a letter to David. Mailed it. Went to school. No trouble. Eve. Washed my clothes and spread them on the grass. Rained some. Tuesday, July 9, 1861 Washed my dress. Rinsed up my clothes. Had a large wash. Went to school. Noon. Brought in my clothes. Eve. Went to Mr. Biblers to stay all night with Maggie. Had a pleasant time. It rained a hard shower. Lee (?) and I showered our heads in the shower. had some ice clod lemonade. Ice water in school. Wednesday, July 10, 1861 Came home. Ironed some of my clothes. Went to school. Had ice water. Went and took dinner with Maggie. After school ironed again. Went to stay all night with Maggie. Found her lonely. Got over it when I went. Mr. L. came in in the eve. Stayed awhile. Tried to sing but the boys would not. Rained two showers. Thursday, July 11, 1861 Came home. Finished ironing. Went to school. Scholars happy. One little by came home with me. Gave me a good night kiss. Wrote to sister Mary. Went to the office. Went to Mr. Tailors to see the sick. Went to Bills. Chatted. Went home with Mag. Stayed all night. Add was there in the eve. Had lemonade. Friday, July 12, 1861 Came home after the key. Was cold and damp. Felt uneasy about home. Did not get any letter. Read the Presidents Message. Talked some as usual. Went to bed early. Saturday, July 13, 1861 Did not get up very early. Put away my clothes. Mollie and I cut up some. Went to school. Had a small one. Had a good time to get started home. They all wanted to have a hand. Went to the office. Got some paper. Got a letter from Maze. Felt real sad to think did not get one from home. Add, Mollie and I went to Salem to hear Asher lecture. Got smoked(?). Sunday, July 14, 1861 Beautiful morning. Mollie, Add and I went to Adrain to quarterly meeting. Heard a sermon at 11 AM, one at 3 PM and one in the eve. They were good. We took dinner with Mr. _____. Formed some new acquaintances. Had a pleasant time. All walked to church. Mr. Cline went with me. All talked about going to Sharaddons. Mr. C seemed a little taken with this child. Monday, July 15, 1861 Fixed some of my clothes. Went to school. Not very large. Noon. Mr. Dick was here. Said that he was coming to school. Did. Stayed all the afternoon. Wanted me to teach the winter term. Came home. Did not do much of anything. Did not feel like it. Went to Adrain to hear Simm's lecture. Saw Mr. Cline. He waited on me to the buggy. Tuesday, July 16, 1861 Rather cold and gloomy. Do not feel very well. Went to school. Found it rather small for _____ school. Went in to Mr. Biblers. Got a letter from Martha and one from the dead letter office that I sent to Charlie. Cut out my dress. Did not feel much like work. News from home not very satisfactory. Wednesday, July 17, 1861 Worked at my dress. Went to school. Rather warm and dry. Went in to see Mag. Thursday, July 18, 1861 Nothing important. Had some sport with Mollie about getting the Mitten. Talked about what great things we would do Saturday night. Friday, July 19, 1861 Some appearance of rain but did not. Had rather a small school. Did not feel very well. Raining a little now. Hope that it will continue. Read some. Sewed some on my dress. Rained a very hard shower. Mollie and I washed and went to bed. Saw a rainbow about 9 o'clock. Saturday, July 20, 1861 Fine morning. Went to school. Felt bad and cross. I could not bare one thing. Night. Went to the show. Rob came there. Was real glad to see him. Mr. Cline came home with me. Rob and Mollie tried to tease us all that they could. Had sport about the crackers. Mr. Hollinshead teased me about having an assistant teacher. Coppied some poetry. Sunday, July 21, 1861 Talked to Rob. Mollie, Rob, Add and I took a walk out in the woods. Had a pleasant time. Read some while Rob was down town. George came home with them. Rob went home. Add and I took a short ride. Stopped at Mr. Hanes. Came back. Went to singing. Did not have much of a sing. We took a long ride after singing and such a nice time. Very pleasant. Rather cool. Came home. Found Mollie enjoying herself. Monday, July 22, 1861 Pleasant. Talked abut matters and things in particular. Wonder if rob will go away. Went to school. Schollars all ran to meet me and sat on my lap till Mr. Dick came in. I talked with him. He told me that I could close school at the end of 4 month. I wanted me to teach the winter term, but not I. Tuesday, July 23, 1861 Rather cold for this time of the year. Went to school. Had upward of 20 pupils. No trouble. Had a letter from Eliza and Marilda. Heard sad news about the war. All our boys reported killed. Too bad. Washed. Did not get through until dark. Talked about war. Felt bad. Wednesday, July 24, 1861 Fine morn. Read war news. Started to school. Met Mr. Tailor. Talked about the war. No good news. Went in to see a little dear schollar. Sad sight. Read a long speech. Mollie and (I) went down town. Went in and stayed a long time talking with Leeander (?). Went in to see Bill. Went in to see the sick sailors. Went home with Mary. Saw the new baby. Back to sailors. Had company part way home. Thursday, July 25, 1861 Ironed part of my clothes. Went to school. No good war news. Came home just as they were starting to the funeral and such a time as they had. I stopped with the schollars until they got off. I was talking with Dr. Young and wife. Came home. Finished ironing. Talked about the picnic. Read some. Friday, July 26, 1861 Some appearance of rain. Got up quite early. More fighting. Bad. Bad. Went to school. No trouble. Started for home about 9 AM. Raining when we went through _____. Got to Inks about 8. Had good a time generally getting there. Rained a shower. Rolla not well. Mollie seemed to enjoy herself. Saturday, July 27, 1861 Went to brother Jims for dinner. Found them well. Went to Republic. Conversation war. Went to the store. Went to see Inez. Talked about the poor boys. Came home. Miss Gregories (?) came in to see me. Read Phenandos (?) letter. Rained. Sunday, July 28, 1861 Rained. We went up to Mr. Bogarts and stayed until 3 PM. Had a pretty good time. Stopped in town a short time. Started for Berwick after 4. Called at Thomasas. Stopped near Berwick to talk to the boys. Got home before 8. Monday, July 29, 1861 Sewed on my dress. Thought the day long. Went down to the store to exchange some velvet. Went in to see Bill. Talked about the picnic. Went in to see the sick. Got a letter from Armana. Tuesday, July 30, 1861 Sewed some. Nothing important. Went down town to get some silk. Went in to Mr. Tailors and went in to see Bill. Wednesday, July 31, 1861 School not very large. Warm. Sat out on the roof of the portico in the eve. Add was sitting there too. We had a little sport. August 1861 Thursday, August 1, 1861 Very hot. Thermometer stood at 100 in the shade. 114 in the sun. Friday, August 2, 1861 Finished my dress. Went to school. Quite small. Came home. Washed. Did not get through until dark. The boys washed some too. Saturday, August 3, 1861 Ironed some. Rained a nice shower. Went to school. Went in to see Mr. Hopper, nearly dead. Died in a short time. The committee met to make arrangement about the picnic. Got along very well. Had singing in the eve. Good many there. Mr. Cline came home with me. Sunday, August 4, 1861 Beautiful morning. Mr. Cline and I went to see _____ _____. Did not get to hear the sermon. Great many there. Enjoyed ourselves very much for strangers. Talked about matters and things in particular. He stayed until near dark. We went to hear Mr Culler preach. Commenced a letter to uncle. Monday, August 5, 1861 Raining. Very warm and growing weather. Have a great deal to think about. Went to school. Did not have much fun. Wrote to Martha and Rob. Finished uncles letter. Went to the schoolhouse to the committee meeting. Cried about the way the schollars acted. Made all my necessary arrangement for the picnic. Tuesday, August 6, 1861 Went to the office to mail my letters. Went into see Bell. She all right. Talked to Dr. Young about the picnic. Went in the store to get some velvet ribbon. Went in to see Mrs. Bibler. Went to school. The schollars most all there. Some of them acted very grouchy. I felt bad. Add and I talked. Wednesday, August 7, 1861 Mollie and Add gone to Tiffin. Mollie going to get things for the picnic. I gave her one dollar to get with. Schollars waiting at the gate. Mollie got primies. Crushaid (crocheted) some brade for Mollie. Went to bed. Could not sleep. Thursday, August 8, 1861 Finished crushaing (crocheting) 3 yards of brade. Went to school. Felt very sad. Trouble at recess. Had quite a time. Went to see Bell about it at noon. Felt sad. Came home. Told how it was. Did not eat much dinner. Did not care if I ever saw another school or not. Mr. Weikert said I ought to have whipped about that. Friday, August 9, 1861 Made a delicate cake. Went to school. Most all of my schollars there. I was not sorry that school was so near out. Schollars seemed rather happy. Came home. Made a jelly cake. Trimmed them. Had a great time. Mollie and I wanted to excel in nice cake. We worked hard. Had a letter from David. Saturday, August 10, 1861 Finished trimming cake. They looked proper nice. All met at the schoolhouse. Rob was there. Marched by the grove. Had two speeches. Had dinner. Had 2 wings. Had a general time. Good many there. Mr. Cline brought me home. All came in. Had some little fun. All passed off pleasantly. Sunday, August 11, 1861 Laughed and talked. Went to church. Came home. George came with us. Barb and Celia went home. Went to Rigle (?). Took the little girls a short ride. Sat under the grape barner (?). Mr. Cline came. Sat in the garden and chatted awhile. Came in. Had a pleasant talk about matters and things in particular. Rained. Monday, August 12, 1861 Washed. Raining so I cannot hang out my clothes. Rained all day. Finished making out my report. Felt kind of tired. Talked to Mr. Weikerts. Folks hated to hear me say anything about going home. Tuesday, August 13, 1861 Mr. Weikert made a fire for me to dry my clothes. Got them partly dry. Packed my trunk. Mollie hated to hear me say anything about going home. All went with me to the cars. Left 2 P.M. Got to Tiffin. George met me there. Put my trunk on the hack. Went with me over _____. Went in the store. Saw me on the hack. Got home safe. Miss Hill came in. Went down town with her. Wednesday, August 14, 1861 Beautiful morning. Rinsed my clothes over. Hung them up. Talked a good share. Rob went town to Jims. Thursday, August 15, 1861 Martha and I ironed. Went down town. Talked about war. Some excitement about the battle. Brother Robert decided to go to Virginia. he and I with some other of the zany folks spent the eve at Mr. Gregorys. Wrote to David. Friday, August 16, 1861 I cut out 3 shorts for brother. Went down street with Nan. Martha and I sewed all we could. Finished one shirt and commenced the other. Had more or less company. Saturday, August 17, 1861 Inez came down to help me make Roberts needle back. Martha did her work. She helped me all that she could. I finished the other shirts before dark and then washed them. Robert went to Tiffin and Bloomville. Sunday, August 18, 1861 Went to Sabbath school. Taught a class. Heard Thompson preach his farewell sermon. Commenced a letter to Mr. Cline. Went with Robert to presbyterian meeting. Finished my letter. Talked to Jim. Felt bad about Robert going to war. R. and I went up to see Inez and had a pleasant time. Monday, August 19, 1861 Finished R. needle book. It was nice. He and I went to Tiffin. I had 3 pictures taken. Saw Mr. Cline and George. Came to Jims for supper. Came home. Finished fixing R. things. The young folks came in to see Robert before he bade adieu to home. All seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Tuesday, August 20, 1861 Felt sad. Packed the things in Roberts sachel. Mr. Bogart, Nan, Martha and I went with him to Bloomville. He seemed to be in good spirits. Oh dear! How bad I did feel to see him go. He started with two good horses. We came home feeling sad. I went in the parlor and cried as long as I pleased. How I did feel. Eve. I wrote 3 letters, one to Annie, one to Eliza and Maze. Went to the office. Took a walk with the girls. Wednesday, August 21, 1861 We washed. Tried to sew, but could not. Felt sad. Slept some. Wrote a letter to Mollie. Hannah came in before I got through. Took it to the office. Nite. Some of the young folks laughed at Hannah about trying to run off with a married man. Went home with brother James. Thursday, August 22, 1861 Sewed some on Nan's dress. Rained all the forenoon. Came home. Sewed some. Mr. Bogart and Nan here. The girls were in. Had a letter from P.F.C. Talked. Read war news. Felt anxious about my dear brother. Friday, August 23, 1861 Tryed to work some. Good many in so that I could not do much. Eve. Hannah and I went up to see Gill. Came back to find the choir meeting. Went in to Mr. Hamiltons. Found the choir at Mr. Gregory's. Had quite a lively time. After the meeting broke up 10 of us girls went out serenading. It was quite funny with not one bug. Saturday, August 24, 1861 All went out to hunt elderberries. Had any amount of fun. Found elderberries by the acre 6 miles east from Attica. Got all we could haul. Had a great time eating dinner under the big tree. Sunday, August 25, 1861 Went to the Baptist Association. Heard a minister from India in the forenoon. In the afternoon we heard one preach that was from Mane (?). Took dinner with Sophia. Saw a great many of my old friends. Came home. Wrote a letter to Mr. C. Monday, August 26, 1861 We worked with elderberries. Got them all done or picked. Had a great time with nice hands. Miss Hall and Mr. J.C.D. came in and chatted. Wrote a note to Mollie Mc. Tuesday, August 27, 1861 Went down to Thomases. Made the waist of my dress. Wednesday, August 28, 1861 Got home. Had a note from Robert. Thursday, August 29, 1861 Hannah and I went out to Mr. Bogarts. Had a pleasant time. Young folks came in. We went down town. Got a letter from Mr. C. Friday, August 30, 1861 Washed. Ironed some. Had some company. Went to the lecture. Saturday, August 31, 1861 Finished ironing. Dressed. Had my hair curled. Went in to Mr. Gregrays. Mr. C. came. Glad to see him. Took a walk to the graveyard. Had a pleasant time. September 1861 Sunday, September 1, 1861 Went to Sabbath school. Returned to church. Heard Mr. Brown. We went up to Mr. Bogarts. Enjoyed the call. Jim said I had better go to Berwick with Mr. C. I thought so too. Went. Had a pleasant ride there. All very much pleased to see me. Spent the eve pleasantly. Monday, September 2, 1861 Got my money. Left Berwick at 2 PM. Came to Tiffin. Went to the store. Exchanged my shoes. Dr. Liners came in. Went with me to the hack. Read bad news about the war. Felt uneasy about the Robert dear. Tuesday, September 3, 1861 Sewed. Thought I would finish my shemise but did not. Mrs. Wade came to see if we had heard from Robert. Wednesday, September 4, 1861 Baked some. Thought we could send something to Rob but could not. Went to the picnic. Had a nice little time. Quite a number there. Could see the effects of the war. Came home. Went down town with Nan. Felt anxious about Rob. Felt glad to hear of the death of Jeff Davis. Thursday, September 5, 1861 Got ready. All went to Tiffin to visit camp. Saw many that we knew . All seemed happy _____. Some companies sworn in. Went to the store. Got some muslin and calico to finish with. Came home. Got a long letter from Rob. All right. Commenced a letter to him. Wrote to Mr. C. Went to bed late. Friday, September 6, 1861 Company in and out often. Finished Roberts letter. Went down town with Hannah. Got some oilcloth to make some baskets and needlebooks. _____ came down after me to go and stay with her awhile. Her folks was gone to Findlay. Went. Did not feel very well. Martin read war news. Saturday, September 7, 1861 Mr. Bogarts started, I wrote a to Maggie ____, on to Will _____. I made two needle books. One for cousin Thomas and the other for friend John. Went over to see Mrs. Hank. She thought my needbooks proper nice. Celia and I did about as we pleased and that was not much. Sunday, September 8, 1861 Aaron brought me home as we were going to Tiffin to see the soldiers. Went. I finished my need books on the road. Had a pleasant time. Rather sad. Saw many that we knew. Big crowd there. Heard a sermon. Saw their parade. Gibson spoke. Good. Had to say goodby. Felt very bad. Came home. Went to Mr. Bogarts after dark. Celia alone. Talked. Read. Felt sad. Went to bed. Monday, September 9, 1861 Wrote a letter to Maggie Shaly. One to Will DeWill. Celia wrote one. Tried to sew some. Helped Celia some. Went down town to mail the letters. Mollie Troxell and I went to the office to get some letters but the mail had not come and disappointed I went back to Mr. Bogarts. Tuesday, September 10, 1861 Came home to help do a very large wash. Got a letter from Mr. C. Did a very large wash. Had company in the eve. All heard favorable war news. Night. 29 Ohio Regiment left Tiffin at 10 o'clock. They were a fine looking set of men. Went of (off) in fine spirits. Col. Gibson gave his daughter to the Reg. Wednesday, September 11, 1861 Ironed all day. Martha helped in the morning. She is sick but would help some. Clothes looked nice. Inez came in and we talked about matters and things in general. Had a letter from David. Wrote to Mr. C. Martha not well. Tired. Went to bed. Thursday, September 12, 1861 Martha no better. I done the work. Commenced setting my quilt together. Ellen came to have me go a horse back riding. I left the supper table and all to go. We had a proper nice ride. Rode all over town and at a pretty fast rate too. It was very pleasant. Read some. Friday, September 13, 1861 Got up real early. Baked. Fixed for _____ and had one _____. Sewed some. Hannah came in. Young girls came. Went in to Mr. Gregrays. Stayed awhile. All went to congress meeting. Had quite a time. Came home. Read in the daily and other papers. Went to bed. Dreamed of war and forming regiments. Saturday, September 14, 1861 Did the work. Martha went to Thomases. Jim and Nan came. Felt tired and sad. Read war news. Felt anxious about Robert. Felt a little as though I had no friends. Heard of Pools(?) downfall. Did not feel very sorry a bit. Got a letter from Mollie ___. Sunday, September 15, 1861 Went to Sabbath school. Heard Orlando try to preach. Came home. Wrote to Robert. Read some. Jesse was here. Felt lonely in the eve. Monday, September 16, 1861 Made Viola a hat out of her old flat. Went down to Mollie Hills to have her tell me little about it. We went to the office as soon as the mail came in and I got two letters. One from Mollie Grub and one from Mr. C. Tuesday, September 17, 1861 Rained near all day. Sewed. Finished my quilt. Wrote a letter to Mr. C. Jesse came home from the _____ and tried to torment me. Wednesday, September 18, 1861 Washed. Celia came to have me to go with her to Jims. I was near ready. Mary and family came and could not go. Trimmed Viola's hat. Talked. Thursday, September 19, 1861 Rinsed up the clothes. Put in Violas skirt. Martha and I quilted it out before dark. Got a letter from Marilda. Had company in the eve. Friday, September 20, 1861 Got up very early. We churned, baked and ironed and was ready to go to Tiffin by 9 o'clock. Went. Got stuff to fix my dress. Had an introduction to Rev. Geo. Dunn. He came home with us. Brought his baggage with him. Rather a pleasant man. Went with the girls to congress. Did not stay long. Came back and listened to the preacher talk. Saturday, September 21, 1861 Baked some. Finished ironing. Inez came. Dunn here all day. In the eve, Rev. _____ came and had others come in and out. I went to the office thinking that I would get a letter from Robert, but was sadly disappointed. Felt rather gloomy on other accounts. Sunday, September 22, 1861 Went to Sabbath school. Taught one class the best of my ability. Heard a good sermon by Rev. McKun (?). Came home. Read several speeches by different authors. Wrote a letter to my brother Robert. Read. Rev. Dunn came here from his appointments. Stayed all night. Monday, September 23, 1861 Did the morning work. Helped wash. Fine morning. Martha and Albert started for Wood County. Mr. Dunn went to Pleasant Ridge. left me to keep house. The girls came in to get me to go horseback riding. Could not go of course. Riped up my green dress to make in a rapper. Got two letters. One from Robert and the other from Mr. C. Read war news. Sewed some and went to bed. Tuesday, September 24, 1861 Did the morning work. Ironed. Father came in. Read the letter to him. Hannah came in to get me to go to the woods. Mr. Dunn came home. Went to the woods a short time. Mr. Dunn and I had quite a time with our children. Got a letter from Miss Shirly. The young folks came in to spend the eve and sing. Had a nice time generally. Had prayer. Mr. Dunn went to bed and I wrote a letter to Mr. C. Wednesday, September 25, 1861 Fine Morn. Churned and attended to other domestic duties. Mr. Dunn went to Lodi. Jim came up and was sick. I was trying to work at my dress. Mr. Dunn came home and was pleasant. Eve. Martha and Albert came to serenade the preacher. He was not much taken with the idea. Cut some peaches. Thursday, September 26, 1861 National fast day. Canned peaches in order to save them. Went to meeting. House full. Had a good sermon. Came home. Brother Dunn here with. Spent the day pleasantly. Went down town with Nan. Eve. Went to prayer meeting. All the young folks there. Came home. Talked about matters and things generally. Friday, September 27, 1861 Went down t Mollies to cut Viola's cloak. Not enough stuff. Came home and Miss G and I went to every store in town to get more. Did not. Came home. Sewed a little. Went down to see Jim. Found him a little better. Got back about dark. Commenced a letter to Rob. Mr. D and Albert sung. D. told of some of the times he had had since he came from England. Saturday, September 28, 1861 Helped do the morning work. Talked. Finished Roberts letter. Made some calls. Came back. Mr. C. came. Dunn stayed in Mr. McKuns place. Spent the eve very pleasantly. Mr. Dunn rather funny. Sunday, September 29, 1861 Helped do the work. Martha went to Sabbath school to teach my class. I went a riding with Mr. C. Called at Jims. Went to the funeral. Saw Mr. Close. He was very glad to see me and I him. Went home with Sophia and took dinner. Had a pleasant time. Came back to Jims. Went to the bridge with Mr. C. Bade him goodbye. The girls tried to tease me about ____. Monday, September 30, 1861 Jim sick. Did not get much done but to help wait on him. Dunn came down to see him. Very dry weather.

No rain yet. Wrote a letter to David. Mailed it. Went to school. No trouble. Eve. Washed my clothes and spread them on the grass. Rained some.

Washed my dress. Rinsed up my clothes. Had a large wash. Went to school. Noon. Brought in my clothes. Eve. Went to Mr. Biblers to stay all night with Maggie. Had a pleasant time. It rained a hard shower. Lee (?) and I showered our heads in the shower. had some ice clod lemonade. Ice water in school.

Came home. Ironed some of my clothes. Went to school. Had ice water. Went and took dinner with Maggie. After school ironed again. Went to stay all night with Maggie. Found her lonely. Got over it when I went. Mr. L. came in in the eve. Stayed awhile. Tried to sing but the boys would not. Rained two showers.

Came home. Finished ironing. Went to school. Scholars happy. One little by came home with me. Gave me a good night kiss. Wrote to sister Mary. Went to the office. Went to Mr. Tailors to see the sick. Came home after the key. Was cold and damp. Felt uneasy about home. Did not get any letter. Read the Presidents Message. Talked some as usual. Went to bed early.

Did not get up very early. Put away my clothes. Mollie and I cut up some. Went to school. Had a small one. Had a good time to get started home. They all wanted to have a hand. Went to the office. Got some paper. Got a letter from Maze. Felt real sad to think did not get one from home. Add, Mollie and I went to Salem to hear Asher lecture. Got smoked(?).

Beautiful morning. Mollie, Add and I went to Adrain to quarterly meeting. Heard a sermon at 11 AM, one at 3 PM and one in the eve. They were good. We took dinner with Mr. _____. Formed some new acquaintances. Had a pleasant time. All walked to church. Mr. Cline went with me. All talked about going to Sharaddons. Mr. C seemed a little taken with this child.

Fixed some of my clothes. Went to school. Not very large. Noon. Mr. Dick was here. Said that he was coming to school. Did. Stayed all the afternoon. Wanted me to teach the winter term. Came home. Did not do much of anything. Did not feel like it. Went to Adrain to hear Simm's lecture. Saw Mr. Cline. He waited on me to the buggy.

Rather cold and gloomy. Do not feel very well. Went to school. Found it rather small for _____ school. Went in to Mr. Biblers. Got a letter from Martha and one from the dead letter office that I sent to Charlie. Cut out my dress. Did not feel much like work. News from home not very satisfactory.

Some appearance of rain but did not. Had rather a small school. Did not feel very well. Raining a little now. Hope that it will continue. Read some. Sewed some on my dress. Rained a very hard shower. Mollie and I washed and went to bed. Saw a rainbow about 9 o'clock.

Fine morning. Went to school. Felt bad and cross. I could not bare one thing. Night. Went to the show. Rob came there. Was real glad to see him. Mr. Cline came home with me. Rob and Mollie tried to tease us all that they could. Had sport about the crackers. Mr. Hollinshead teased me about having an assistant teacher. Coppied some poetry.

Talked to Rob. Mollie, Rob, Add and I took a walk out in the woods. Had a pleasant time. Read some while Rob was down town. George came home with them. Rob went home. Add and I took a short ride. Stopped at Mr. Hanes. Came back. Went to singing. Did not have much of a sing. We took a long ride after singing and such a nice time. Very pleasant. Rather cool. Came home. Found Mollie enjoying herself.

Pleasant. Talked abut matters and things in particular. Wonder if rob will go away. Went to school. Schollars all ran to meet me and sat on my lap till Mr. Dick came in. I talked with him. He told me that I could close school at the end of 4 month. I wanted me to teach the winter term, but not I.

Rather cold for this time of the year. Went to school. Had upward of 20 pupils. No trouble. Had a letter from Eliza and Marilda. Heard sad news about the war. All our boys reported killed. Too bad. Washed. Did not get through until dark. Talked about war. Felt bad.

Fine morn. Read war news. Started to school. Met Mr. Tailor. Talked about the war. No good news. Went in to see a little dear schollar. Sad sight. Read a long speech. Mollie and (I) went down town. Went in and stayed a long time talking with Leeander (?). Went in to see Bill. Went in to see the sick sailors. Went home with Mary. Saw the new baby. Back to sailors. Had company part way home.

Ironed part of my clothes. Went to school. No good war news. Came home just as they were starting to the funeral and such a time as they had. I stopped with the schollars until they got off. I was talking with Dr. Young and wife. Came home. Finished ironing. Talked about the picnic. Read some.

Some appearance of rain. Got up quite early. More fighting. Bad. Bad. Went to school. No trouble. Started for home about 9 AM. Raining when we went through _____. Got to Inks about 8. Had good a time generally getting there. Rained a shower. Rolla not well. Mollie seemed to enjoy herself.

Went to brother Jims for dinner. Found them well. Went to Republic. Conversation war. Went to the store. Went to see Inez. Talked about the poor boys. Came home. Miss Gregories (?) came in to see me. Read Phenandos (?) letter. Rained.

Rained. We went up to Mr. Bogarts and stayed until 3 PM. Had a pretty good time. Stopped in town a short time. Started for Berwick after 4. Called at Thomasas. Stopped near Berwick to talk to the boys. Got home before 8.

Ironed some. Rained a nice shower. Went to school. Went in to see Mr. Hopper, nearly dead. Died in a short time. The committee met to make arrangement about the picnic. Got along very well. Had singing in the eve. Good many there. Mr. Cline came home with me.

Beautiful morning. Mr. Cline and I went to see _____ _____. Did not get to hear the sermon. Great many there. Enjoyed ourselves very much for strangers. Talked about matters and things in particular. He stayed until near dark. We went to hear Mr Culler preach. Commenced a letter to uncle.

Raining. Very warm and growing weather. Have a great deal to think about. Went to school. Did not have much fun. Wrote to Martha and Rob. Finished uncles letter. Went to the schoolhouse to the committee meeting. Cried about the way the schollars acted. Made all my necessary arrangement for the picnic.

Went to the office to mail my letters. Went into see Bell. She all right. Talked to Dr. Young about the picnic. Went in the store to get some velvet ribbon. Went in to see Mrs. Bibler. Went to school. The schollars most all there. Some of them acted very grouchy. I felt bad. Add and I talked.

Mollie and Add gone to Tiffin. Mollie going to get things for the picnic. I gave her one dollar to get with. Schollars waiting at the gate. Mollie got primies. Crushaid (crocheted) some brade for Mollie. Went to bed. Could not sleep.

Thursday, August 8, 1861
Finished crushaing (crocheting) 3 yards of brade. Went to school. Felt very sad. Trouble at recess. Had quite a time. Went to see Bell about it at noon. Felt sad. Came home. Told how it was. Did not eat much dinner. Did not care if I ever saw another school or not. Mr. Weikert said I ought to have whipped about that.

Friday, August 9, 1861
Made a delicate cake. Went to school. Most all of my schollars there. I was not sorry that school was so near out. Schollars seemed rather happy. Came home. Made a jelly cake. Trimmed them. Had a great time. Mollie and I wanted to excel in nice cake. We worked hard. Had a letter from David.

Finished trimming cake. They looked proper nice. All met at the schoolhouse. Rob was there. Marched by the grove. Had two speeches. Had dinner. Had 2 wings. Had a general time. Good many there. Mr. Cline brought me home. All came in. Had some little fun. All passed off pleasantly.

Laughed and talked. Went to church. Came home. George came with us. Barb and Celia went home. Went to Rigle (?). Took the little girls a short ride. Sat under the grape barner (?). Mr. Cline came. Sat in the garden and chatted awhile. Came in. Had a pleasant talk about matters and things in particular. Rained.

Washed. Raining so I cannot hang out my clothes. Rained all day. Finished making out my report. Felt kind of tired. Talked to Mr. Weikerts. Folks hated to hear me say anything about going home.

Mr. Weikert made a fire for me to dry my clothes. Got them partly dry. Packed my trunk. Mollie hated to hear me say anything about going home. All went with me to the cars. Left 2 P.M. Got to Tiffin. George met me there. Put my trunk on the hack. Went with me over _____. Went in the store. Saw me on the hack. Got home safe. Miss Hill came in. Went down town with her.

Beautiful morning. Rinsed my clothes over. Hung them up. Talked a good share. Rob went town to Jims.

Martha and I ironed. Went down town. Talked about war. Some excitement about the battle. Brother Robert decided to go to Virginia. he and I with some other of the zany folks spent the eve at Mr. Gregorys. Wrote to David.

Friday, August 16, 1861
I cut out 3 shorts for brother. Went down street with Nan. Martha and I sewed all we could. Finished one shirt and commenced the other. Had more or less company.

Saturday, August 17, 1861
Inez came down to help me make Roberts needle back. Martha did her work. She helped me all that she could. I finished the other shirts before dark and then washed them. Robert went to Tiffin and Bloomville.

Sunday, August 18, 1861
Went to Sabbath school. Taught a class. Heard Thompson preach his farewell sermon. Commenced a letter to Mr. Cline. Went with Robert to presbyterian meeting. Finished my letter. Talked to Jim. Felt bad about Robert going to war. R. and I went up to see Inez and had a pleasant time.

Monday, August 19, 1861
Finished R. needle book. It was nice. He and I went to Tiffin. I had 3 pictures taken. Saw Mr. Cline and George. Came to Jims for supper. Came home. Finished fixing R. things. The young folks came in to see Robert before he bade adieu to home. All seemed to enjoy themselves very much.

Felt sad. Packed the things in Roberts sachel. Mr. Bogart, Nan, Martha and I went with him to Bloomville. He seemed to be in good spirits. Oh dear! How bad I did feel to see him go. He started with two good horses. We came home feeling sad. I went in the parlor and cried as long as I pleased. How I did feel. Eve. I wrote 3 letters, one to Annie, one to Eliza and Maze. Went to the office. Took a walk with the girls.

We washed. Tried to sew, but could not. Felt sad. Slept some. Wrote a letter to Mollie. Hannah came in before I got through. Took it to the office. Nite. Some of the young folks laughed at Hannah about trying to run off with a married man. Went home with brother James.

Sewed some on Nan's dress. Rained all the forenoon. Came home. Sewed some. Mr. Bogart and Nan here. The girls were in. Had a letter from P.F.C. Talked. Read war news. Felt anxious about my dear brother.

Tryed to work some. Good many in so that I could not do much. Eve. Hannah and I went up to see Gill. Came back to find the choir meeting. Went in to Mr. Hamiltons. Found the choir at Mr. Gregory's. Had quite a lively time. After the meeting broke up 10 of us girls went out serenading. It was quite funny with not one bug.

All went out to hunt elderberries. Had any amount of fun. Found elderberries by the acre 6 miles east from Attica. Got all we could haul. Had a great time eating dinner under the big tree.

Went to the Baptist Association. Heard a minister from India in the forenoon. In the afternoon we heard one preach that was from Mane (?). Took dinner with Sophia. Saw a great many of my old friends. Came home. Wrote a letter to Mr. C.

We worked with elderberries. Got them all done or picked. Had a great time with nice hands. Miss Hall and Mr. J.C.D. came in and chatted. Wrote a note to Mollie Mc.

Got my money. Left Berwick at 2 PM. Came to Tiffin. Went to the store. Exchanged my shoes. Dr. Liners came in. Went with me to the hack. Read bad news about the war. Felt uneasy about the Robert dear.

Sewed. Thought I would finish my shemise but did not. Mrs. Wade came to see if we had heard from Robert.

Baked some. Thought we could send something to Rob but could not. Went to the picnic. Had a nice little time. Quite a number there. Could see the effects of the war. Came home. Went down town with Nan. Felt anxious about Rob. Felt glad to hear of the death of Jeff Davis.

Thursday, September 5, 1861
Got ready. All went to Tiffin to visit camp. Saw many that we knew . All seemed happy _____. Some companies sworn in. Went to the store. Got some muslin and calico to finish with. Came home. Got a long letter from Rob. All right. Commenced a letter to him. Wrote to Mr. C. Went to bed late.

Company in and out often. Finished Roberts letter. Went down town with Hannah. Got some oilcloth to make some baskets and needlebooks. _____ came down after me to go and stay with her awhile. Her folks was gone to Findlay. Went. Did not feel very well. Martin read war news.

Saturday, September 7, 1861
Mr. Bogarts started, I wrote a to Maggie ____, on to Will _____. I made two needle books. One for cousin Thomas and the other for friend John. Went over to see Mrs. Hank. She thought my needbooks proper nice. Celia and I did about as we pleased and that was not much.

Sunday, September 8, 1861
Aaron brought me home as we were going to Tiffin to see the soldiers. Went. I finished my need books on the road. Had a pleasant time. Rather sad. Saw many that we knew. Big crowd there. Heard a sermon. Saw their parade. Gibson spoke. Good. Had to say goodby. Felt very bad. Came home. Went to Mr. Bogarts after dark. Celia alone. Talked. Read. Felt sad. Went to bed.

Wrote a letter to Maggie Shaly. One to Will DeWill. Celia wrote one. Tried to sew some. Helped Celia some. Went down town to mail the letters. Mollie Troxell and I went to the office to get some letters but the mail had not come and disappointed I went back to Mr. Bogarts.

Came home to help do a very large wash. Got a letter from Mr. C. Did a very large wash. Had company in the eve. All heard favorable war news. Night. 29 Ohio Regiment left Tiffin at 10 o'clock. They were a fine looking set of men. Went of (off) in fine spirits. Col. Gibson gave his daughter to the Reg.

Ironed all day. Martha helped in the morning. She is sick but would help some. Clothes looked nice. Inez came in and we talked about matters and things in general. Had a letter from David. Wrote to Mr. C. Martha not well. Tired. Went to bed.

Thursday, September 12, 1861
Martha no better. I done the work. Commenced setting my quilt together. Ellen came to have me go a horse back riding. I left the supper table and all to go. We had a proper nice ride. Rode all over town and at a pretty fast rate too. It was very pleasant. Read some.

Got up real early. Baked. Fixed for _____ and had one _____. Sewed some. Hannah came in. Young girls came. Went in to Mr. Gregrays. Stayed awhile. All went to congress meeting. Had quite a time. Came home. Read in the daily and other papers. Went to bed. Dreamed of war and forming regiments.

Did the work. Martha went to Thomases. Jim and Nan came. Felt tired and sad. Read war news. Felt anxious about Robert. Felt a little as though I had no friends. Heard of Pools(?) downfall. Did not feel very sorry a bit. Got a letter from Mollie ___.

Went to Sabbath school. Heard Orlando try to preach. Came home. Wrote to Robert. Read some. Jesse was here. Felt lonely in the eve.

Made Viola a hat out of her old flat. Went down to Mollie Hills to have her tell me little about it. We went to the office as soon as the mail came in and I got two letters. One from Mollie Grub and one from Mr. C.

Rained near all day. Sewed. Finished my quilt. Wrote a letter to Mr. C. Jesse came home from the _____ and tried to torment me.

Washed. Celia came to have me to go with her to Jims. I was near ready. Mary and family came and could not go. Trimmed Viola's hat. Talked.

Rinsed up the clothes. Put in Violas skirt. Martha and I quilted it out before dark. Got a letter from Marilda. Had company in the eve.

Friday, September 20, 1861
Got up very early. We churned, baked and ironed and was ready to go to Tiffin by 9 o'clock. Went. Got stuff to fix my dress. Had an introduction to Rev. Geo. Dunn. He came home with us. Brought his baggage with him. Rather a pleasant man. Went with the girls to congress. Did not stay long. Came back and listened to the preacher talk.

Baked some. Finished ironing. Inez came. Dunn here all day. In the eve, Rev. _____ came and had others come in and out. I went to the office thinking that I would get a letter from Robert, but was sadly disappointed. Felt rather gloomy on other accounts.

Went to Sabbath school. Taught one class the best of my ability. Heard a good sermon by Rev. McKun (?). Came home. Read several speeches by different authors. Wrote a letter to my brother Robert. Read. Rev. Dunn came here from his appointments. Stayed all night.

Monday, September 23, 1861
Did the morning work. Helped wash. Fine morning. Martha and Albert started for Wood County. Mr. Dunn went to Pleasant Ridge. left me to keep house. The girls came in to get me to go horseback riding. Could not go of course. Riped up my green dress to make in a rapper. Got two letters. One from Robert and the other from Mr. C. Read war news. Sewed some and went to bed.

Did the morning work. Ironed. Father came in. Read the letter to him. Hannah came in to get me to go to the woods. Mr. Dunn came home. Went to the woods a short time. Mr. Dunn and I had quite a time with our children. Got a letter from Miss Shirly. The young folks came in to spend the eve and sing. Had a nice time generally. Had prayer. Mr. Dunn went to bed and I wrote a letter to Mr. C.

Fine Morn. Churned and attended to other domestic duties. Mr. Dunn went to Lodi. Jim came up and was sick. I was trying to work at my dress. Mr. Dunn came home and was pleasant. Eve. Martha and Albert came to serenade the preacher. He was not much taken with the idea. Cut some peaches.

National fast day. Canned peaches in order to save them. Went to meeting. House full. Had a good sermon. Came home. Brother Dunn here with. Spent the day pleasantly. Went down town with Nan. Eve. Went to prayer meeting. All the young folks there. Came home. Talked about matters and things generally.

Friday, September 27, 1861
Went down t Mollies to cut Viola's cloak. Not enough stuff. Came home and Miss G and I went to every store in town to get more. Did not. Came home. Sewed a little. Went down to see Jim. Found him a little better. Got back about dark. Commenced a letter to Rob. Mr. D and Albert sung. D. told of some of the times he had had since he came from England.

Helped do the morning work. Talked. Finished Roberts letter. Made some calls. Came back. Mr. C. came. Dunn stayed in Mr. McKuns place. Spent the eve very pleasantly. Mr. Dunn rather funny.

Helped do the work. Martha went to Sabbath school to teach my class. I went a riding with Mr. C. Called at Jims. Went to the funeral. Saw Mr. Close. He was very glad to see me and I him. Went home with Sophia and took dinner. Had a pleasant time. Came back to Jims. Went to the bridge with Mr. C. Bade him goodbye. The girls tried to tease me about ____.

Jim sick. Did not get much done but to help wait on him. Dunn came down to see him. Very dry weather.
