September 1909[Minutes, September 7, 1909] The W.C.T.U. met at the home of Mrs. Dr. Cook, Sept. 7-1909. Meeting called to order by Pres. Opening song. Nearer my God to Thee. Scripture lesson, Heb. 11th Chapter. Prayer by Mrs. Patterson. Song No. 4 on leaflet-Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. A motion made an seconded, "That we pay state dues on all members that are paid in full by Sept. 28th." Reports from the Supts. of the different departments. The election of officers being in order the following ones were elected : Pres. Maud Ackerman. V. P. Mrs. Dr. Jackson., Sec. Alta Chapman, Ass't Sec. Jessie Wilson, Treas. Ida Griffith Pianist- Luella Cook. Chorister-Maggie Bricker. It was moved and seconded, "That we pay all expenses of one delegate to the state convention." Carried. Alta Chapman was elected to go. There were eight names voted on to act as delegates and alternates at convention. This union being allowed five delegates. The names were as follows: Maud Ackerman, Mercy Dorsey, Ida Hardesty, Anna Hart, Mrs. Sollenbarger, Lura Thompson, Mary Hart, and Mrs. Walker. A rising vote of thanks was given the outgoing Pres. & Sec. Mrs. Patterson and Lura Thompson. Dismissed with prayer by Mrs. Anna Hart. Lura Thompson, Sec. October 1909[Minutes, October 1, 1909] The W.C.T.U. met at the home of Mrs. Lura Thompson, Oct. 1st, 1909. The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Patterson. Song No. 4 on leaflet was sung followed by prayer by Mrs. Mary Hart. Subject of meeting, "Franchise." Reading and talk on "Old Bible Readings of Franchise" by Mrs. Patterson. She said, "If we would read the 31st ch. of Prov. we could see what the women are expected to do. It is called the woman's chapter." Prayer by Mrs. Patterson. Song No. 1. Sec's report was read and approved. Treas report was read and approved. The Sec's report of the year was then read and a motion made my Mrs. Crook, "to accept the Treas. and Sec's reports as read." Motion carried. Mrs. Patterson made mention of the following. Spend $5 for Lib. for Local Option $2.25 for circulating letter at Local Option. $7 State Delegates ex. to Convention. Mrs. Cook, our Co. Pres. gave an interesting and encouraging talk. She said, "That many ladies thro' the country do not know what W.C.T.U. means." So as an object lesson to them she had made a tree 6 ft. high. The roots represent the Crusade, the trunk The W.C.T.U., the limbs the other depts. She said, "That we are not an antagonistic Society but an educational one." Mrs. Patterson then rewarded that we had paid dues on 155 members. And as we were working to reach the 500 mark in Def. Co. if necessary, we pay the dues of the other three members. A motion was made to that effect, and carried. Then Mrs. Patterson gave a splendid talk on the workings of the union. Report from Co. Supt. of Fair Work, Mrs. Walker. She reported of having handed out 100 Ohio Messengers. 125 leaflets- On "Buy Your Cherries". 4 or 5000 tracts, during the Hicksville Fair. A Communication was read by Mrs. Patterson which proved to be the resignation of Mrs. Ackerman as Pres. of the Union. No motion was taken upon it at this meeting. Mrs. Hart suggested that a com. be appointed to go and see Mrs. A. on accepting the office. The Com. appointed was Mrs. Crook & Mrs. Mary Hart. Mrs. Trumbull suggested to report at each meeting the no. of sick & to send flowers to them. Remarks by Mrs. Dr. Kinmont, Mrs. Keener, Mrs. Duncan, & Mrs. Crary, she also suggested that the members of "W" call on Mrs. Loomis on the Hicks St. Song- Blest be the tie. Atta M. Chapman, Sec'y November 1909[Minutes, November 5, 1909] The WCTU met at the home of Mrs. Geo. Wilderson, Nov. 5th, '09. Meeting called to order at 2:30 by President Mrs. Ackerman. Opening Song, No. 1. Mrs. Richards & English leading in song. Devotionals were by Mrs. Anna Hart. Prayer by Mrs. H. Bricker. Song No. 4. Scripture Reading 91st psalm. Eighteen ladies responded to Roll Call. One visitor present, total of nineteen. Sec. Report read and approved. The report of the State Conv. Was then given. Miss Shutt from Auburn Ind. Was present and gave an interesting talk on the Ind. State Conv. Held at Muncie, Oct 1st to 5th. She spoke of there being 70 dry counties in Ind. WCTU doxology was sung and meeting dismissed by mrs. Alta Chapman, Sec. December 1909[Minutes, December 6, 1909] On Mon. P.M. Dec 6 th, the Co. Pres. called a meeting of the W.C.T.U. to meet at the home of Mrs. Ackerman. Our acc't of illness the Co. Pres. was absent, therefore Mrs. Patterson presided at the meetings and opened the services by singing one verse of nearer My God To Thee. Prayer was offered by Mrs. Stahl and Mrs. Anna Hart. The thot of the scripture lesson was, "God's thot on plan of work and workers." This was ably discussed by Mrs. Patterson. Mrs. H. Bricker then offered prayer. Song No. 1 was sung. Sec's report read and approved. A rising vote of thanks was given to the delegate to the State Conv. for the excellent report given at the meeting of Nov. 5th. The unfinished business left from the Oct. meeting was taken up. The Com. assigned to call on Mrs. A. in regards to the accepting of the office of Pres. gave its report. In which was stated that Mrs. A. tho't she could not accept the office. A short talk was given by Mrs. A. where in she gave her reasons for not accepting the office. A motion made by Mrs. Mary Hart. Seconded by Mrs. Stahl, "That we accept the resignation of Mrs. A. Motion carried. Ballots were prepared to vote for President, the nominations to be made by acclamation, but as each name that was presented for Pres. Bro't forth objections, a motion was made "That the nominations be made by ballot." Motion prevailed, & union proceeded to ballot. The names that were nominated were Mrs. Patterson (16 votes) Mrs. Dr. Jackson (2) Mrs. McCurdy (1) Mrs. Hart (1) Mrs. Pattersons name being the one to be balloted upon as Pres. A motion was made, "That the nominative ballot be made the elective ballot." Motion carried. Mrs. Jackson acting as chairman, Mrs. Patterson was made President. Mrs. Anna Hart suggested we make the work for Mrs. P as easy as possible. To do so V.P.'s from the different churches were appointed as follows.
Supts. of different depts. were then elected.
Helpers were approved to assist in the flower mission dept. The same being Mrs. Sollenbarger, Miss Armstrong, Mrs. Hiscox, Mrs. Barnett and Mrs. McCurdy. Motions presented before meeting. 1st that money be drawn from treas. to purchase a new Sec.'s Book. 2nd to hold our meetings every first and third Friday of every month until May. 3rd That an offering be taken at our next meeting to put the money back into the Co. Treasurery. 4th Sec. to see that the time of each meeting is reported thro' the town papers, and each V.P. to have it announced from their respectful pulpits, on the Sunday previous to meeting. Chapman, sec'y [Minutes, December 17, 1909] The WCTU met at the home of Mrs. Walla Bricker, Dec. 17th, 1909. Meeting called to order at 2:15, with remarks by the Pres. Song no. 4 was sung. Scripture Lesson 2nd Sam. 21st, 8 verse. Prayer by Pres. Sec.'s report read and approved. Mrs. Patterson then suggested "That we add two more Supts. of Dept. to our list." The dept. of Sabbath Observance with Mrs. Dr. Hull as supt. and the dept. of Sunday school work with Mrs. Maud Hood as Supt. were added. Mrs. Patterson then presented two petitions for the anti-cigarette movement and read a letter rec'd from Mr. Gregg of Toledo, O. A few remarks were made by Mrs. Ackerman and a motion made "That we send $2 to Mr. Gregg to help pay for literature and postage in his work against cigarettes." Motion prevailed. The petitions were given to Mrs. Richardson & Mrs. Jackson to have them signed by voters and sent to our Representatives. Our Co. pres. was unable to be present to give her report of the National Conv. so we were favored with a reading by Mrs. Dr. Jackson, entitled 'Osler Joe, by Geo. R. Simms. By a Solo--More Love to Thee-Mrs. J.F. Miller. And a reading by Mrs. Ackerman, showing how some women do not want the ballot. Remarks by the V.P.'s that were present. Remarks by the Supts. of different depts. Song no. 2 was sung, Prayer offered by Mrs. H. Bricker and Mrs. Mary Hart. After prayer, Mrs. Patterson brought little Frances Williard Trumble before the ladies and she was given the white ribbon salute by all present. Meeting adj. to meet Jan 7th at the home of Mrs. L.A.
