PCL MS 028 Richard Elman Collection

Richard Elman is a professional writer of novels, articles, stories, reviews, and poetry. Literary manuscripts form the core of the collection. He writes both under his name and under the pseudonyms Eric Pearl, John Howland Spyker, Delmar Hanks, and Michael Parnell.

In 1969, Richard Elman first began transferring his manuscripts to the Browne Popular Culture Library, Bowling Green State University. The collection is open for research, but the photocopying of manuscripts must comply with applicable copyright laws. This register was compiled by Nancy White Lee, Popular Culture Library Associate II, in June 1986, revised in November 1989, and updated in August 2009 by Patricia Falk.

Richard Elman was born on April 23, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. He married Emily Schorr, an artist, on June 16, 1956, and was divorced in 1970. They have one daughter. Elman married Alice Neufeld, a writer in 1976. They have one daughter, Lila Neufeld Elman. Richard Elman received a B.A. from Syracuse University, 1955, and a M.A. from Stanford University, 1957. The Elmans resided in Stony Brook, New York until Richard's death on December 31st, 1997.

Elman was public affairs director for WBAI-FM, Pacifica Foundation from 1961-1964. At Columbia University, School of Social Work Research Center, he was a research associate during 1965. In 1966, he was a lecturer in English at Hunter College. From 1966-1967, he was visiting writer at Bennington College. In 1968, Elman was adjunct professor of writing at Columbia University. In 1974, he became a full time freelance writer. Elman is the author of twenty-one books of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

The Richard Elman Collection houses the literary manuscripts for his poetry, radio talk show (Strange Case of Major Arch Roberts), and book (Uptight With The Stones).

Researchers interested in poetry (mainly anti-war), a radio talk show about a reactionary Army Major, and a book about the musical rock group, The Rolling Stones, on tour will find this collection of research value.
