Introduction | The ledger books and papers of Dr. Orlo Mapes document his work as a physician in Ottawa County from the 1890s to 1915. The collection was found in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thomas, Lakeside, Ohio, who loaned them to the Center for Archival Collections for microfilming in August 1988. It is assumed that Dr. Mapes lived in the Thomas home while he practiced medicine in the Lakeside, Marblehead, and Kelley's Island areas of Ottawa County. Dr. Mapes lived from 1859 to 1938 and is buried in the Sackett Cemetery in Danbury Township, Ottawa County, Ohio. His wife, Leona, lived between 1882 and 1942. The first ledger documents Dr. Mapes' house visits, charges incurred and the methods of payment made (cash, work, livestock, crops, cutting wood, produce, etc.) as he practiced in the Ottawa County area. This ledger dates from 1898 to 1915. A small book indexes this ledger as well as an index which appears in the front of the ledger. A second ledger documents Dr. Mapes' work as the company physician at the Kelley's Island Lime and Transport Company, from April 1914 to May 1915. Receipts and bills, most of which were for medical supplies, dating from 1896 to 1907, complete this collection. No restrictions exist on the research use of this microfilm edition. The finding aid was completed by Ann Bowers in August 1988. |
