Introduction | The Ohio Historic Preservation Office, Northwest Ohio District service center office files consist of 14 linear feet of material, consist of National Register of Historic Places nomination forms and information and the project files containing correspondence, National Register nomination forms, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other printed material documenting buildings and sites of historic interest in northwest Ohio. The material was collected during the course of their work by the Regional Coordinators for the Northwest Ohio District Office from the 1970s to 2000, the year the office closed. The Ohio Historic Preservation Office maintains current files on the region in the central office in Columbus. The remaining material was donated to the Center for Archival Collections. No restrictions exist on the use of this collection. Duplication is permitted for the purposes of preservation and research. Researchers are responsible for securing permission to reproduce materials which may be protected by copyright. Lee McLaird, Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections, completed the register in August 2002. |
Agency History | The Northwest Ohio Historic Preservation Office was cosponsored by the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green State University, and the Landmarks Committee of the Maumee Valley Historical Society, and was administered by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio Historical Society. The office was closed in September 1981 due to a loss of funding, and reopened in July 1982, continuing in operation, with some breaks, through March 2000. |
Scope and Content | The Ohio Historic Preservation Office maintained regional service centers throughout the state of Ohio to assist local residents with nominations of properties to the National Register of Historic Places and to raise awareness of historic preservation efforts and services throughout the region. As part of this work, the regional representatives compiled working files for National Register properties and for general historic preservation activity in each county in their districts. The National Register files duplicate materials held by the OHPO and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. These files are organized by county and then by property and include correspondence, forms, memoranda, and reports; printed materials including newspaper clippings, press releases, and publications; and photographs and other illustrative materials. Material in these files dates from the mid-1970s to the closure of the regional office in March 2000. The general or Project Files are again organized by county, beginning with general information on the county as a whole, then subdivided into geographical sections, and then by project or topic if necessary. These files may include correspondence, forms, memoranda and reports; printed materials including newspaper clippings and publications; and photographs, maps, and other illustrative material. Material in these files dates from the mid-1970s to the closure of the regional office in March 2000, with the bulk of correspondence dating from the tenure of Maura Johnson, regional coordinator from 1995-2000. A related collection, the Ohio Historic Preservation Office Negative Collection (MS 304) consists of additional negatives and contact prints of residential, commercial, industrial, religious, public, institutional, and farm structures in northwest Ohio. |
