Agency History | The Bowling Green Rotary Club was created in 1938 by a group of men who sought to create a service organization in Bowling Green, Ohio. Created by Walter Zaugg, the Club originally began under the name of the Civic Club. Once the group had a sufficient amount of membership they began having meetings and drew up a club constitution. On a trip to Columbus, club originator, Zaugg, discovered the headquarters of the Columbus Rotary Club. He made contact with the Columbus Club about starting a club in Bowling Green. The Columbus Club assisted the Bowling Green Rotary Club get its start by contacting the District Governor, Covault, in Northwest Ohio. Thus the Bowling Green Rotary Club was formed out of the Civic Club under the sponsorship of the Tiffin Rotary Club. On June 1, 1938 the Civic Club held a meeting in which the official application for the creation of a Rotary Club in Bowling Green was created. The charter was granted on June 8, 1938, and the charter night was held June 30, 1938. Throughout the years the B.G. Rotary Club has been involved in many activities in the community including helping crippled children, creating senior citizen activities, helping girl scouts find a meeting place, creating a boy scouts group for boys at the Children’s home, creating scholarships for students, and foreign exchange programs for students. Having Bowling Green State University nearby has proven very beneficial for the B.G. Rotary Club as they have had the opportunity to host several conferences over the years. The B.G. Rotary Club has always been very involved in the welfare of the Bowling Green community and has built up and maintained the Wintergarden Camp and Carter Park through funds obtained at an annual auction. Consistently active in the community the B.G. Rotary has greatly assisted the surrounding area and continues to do so as the club grows. Information for this agency history was obtained from the “This is Rotary” History of the B.G. Rotary, found in the Subject Files of this collection. |
