Introduction | The American College Health Association collection was donated to the Center for Archival Collections, to become part of the National Student Affairs Archives, in September 2007. The collection consists of proceedings, annual meeting files, committee files, correspondence, financial records, subject files, documents on the affiliates and sections, publications, and audio-visuals, dating from 1920 to the present. The collection is open to researchers, with one restriction. Researchers not affiliated with the ACHA must inform the ACHA Executive Director or designee about their research interests. Since its inception in 1920, the American College Health Association has been dedicated to the health needs of students at colleges and universities. It is the principal leadership organization for the field of college health and provides services, communications, and advocacy that help its members to advance the health of their campus communities (from the ACHA website). A more detailed history of ACHA can be found at: http://www.acha.org/ACHA/About/History/ACHA/About/History.aspx |
Record Group | The American College Health Association collection is comprised of ten record groups: Proceedings; Annual meetings, Conferences, Workshops; Committees and Task Forces; Correspondence; Financial Files; Subject Files; Affiliates; Sections; Publications; and, Audio-Visuals and Scrapbook Material. Each record group is described below. The Proceedings are very comprehensive and document the establishment and development of ACHA, from its beginning in 1920 through 2007. The Proceedings are comprised of several record series including Constitutions and Bylaws, Officer Rosters, Handbooks and Guidelines, Resolutions, Annual Reports, Strategic Planning files, Summaries of the Annual Meeting Proceedings, Executive Committee and ACHA Council minutes and reports, Council of Delegates and Affiliate Officer minutes and reports, and Assembly of Representatives minutes. The Annual Meetings, Conferences, and Workshops record group includes the programs of the annual meetings and, for several years, meeting abstracts. The annual meeting records date from 1946 to 2007. The programs and proceedings of various conferences and workshops, sponsored by ACHA on topics pertaining to college student health, are also included in this record group. These records date from 1936 to 2006. Committees and Task Forces document the specific interests and administrative needs of ACHA through the establishment of various task forces and committees. The files are arranged alphabetically by name, date from the 1950s through 2007, and include correspondence, minutes, and reports. The Correspondence documents both incoming and outgoing letters of the ACHA officers and executive director, arranged in chronological order and dating from 1952 through 2007. The correspondence for the earlier years is not very complete, but becomes complete starting in 1998. The correspondence documents both internal activities and ACHA’s relationship with other professional associations. The Financial Files include audited financial statements and tax returns, a financial history, budget and finance committee files and strategic planning, and the establishment of the ACHA Foundation. These records date from 1965 to 2010. The Subject Files are one of the larger record groups in this collection. Included are membership directories and brochures, histories and press releases, surveys conducted by ACHA on various health issues, and standards and guidelines developed for college health programs. These files date from the 1920s to 2007. Of research interest are the files on various health issues such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and Meningococcal Disease, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Mental Illness, Alcohol, and grant funded projects pertaining to the training of trainers for college students in high-risk situations. These files document ACHA’s leadership in studying and educating students about these various diseases, and date from the 1980s through 2006. Affiliates formed as a major functional group within ACHA to provide meetings which could be more widely attended by college and university health staff members, and offer a forum for discussion of state and regional problems. The files include correspondence, minutes, reports, conference files, and newsletters of both state and regional affiliates. The files date from the 1930s through 2007. The most comprehensive collection of a regional affiliate is the Pacific Coast College Health Association. Included in this region’s records are constitutions and bylaws, minutes, rosters, correspondence, financial records, conference files, newsletters, slides and photographs dating from 1933 to 2004. The Sections record group documents the interests of various professions involved in college student health. Included are Advanced Practice Clinicians, Athletic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Dental Health, Environmental Health, Health Education, Mental Health, Nursing, Nurse-directed Health Services, Pharmacy, and Students and Consumers. The Section files include newsletters, correspondence, minutes, and reports, dating from the 1960s through 2006. Publications include monographs which are arranged by title and chronologically, the ACHA Newsletter, and the ACHA Journal. The monographs largely date from the 1940s to 2008. The Newsletters date from 1957 to 2006. The Journals date from 1952 to1982. Audio-Visuals and Scrapbook Material include identified and dated photographs of individual officer and awardees, and annual meeting activities. The photographs date from the 1920s to 2004. An orientation slide program also is included. Audio and Video tapes document conference presentations and educational videos on various diseases. These date from the 1980s to 2009. Scrapbook materials include handwritten membership applications, dating from 1920 to 1955; health center building plans from various colleges and universities dating from the 1930s through the 1950s; news clippings and articles from the 1960s; and a photo album from the International Conference on Educational Exchange and Health held in 1992. |
