Title	MS 647 - Mel Brodt Collection
Introduction	Coach Mel Brodt’s twenty-one linear feet of Bowling Green State University track and cross country files and printed materials dating from approximately 1960-1985 were donated to the Center for Archival Collections beginning around 1990 until approximately 2000. Brodt worked with Ann Bowers, Assistant Director and University Archivist, in facilitating the transfer of the collection to the CAC. Processing of the records and writing of the finding aid were completed by Eric Honneffer in November 2013.
Biographical Sketch	Mel Brodt was born in 1926 and graduated from Fairborn High School in Ohio in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps between 1944 and 1945 and was involved with the Aviation Cadet Program and as a Physical Training Instructor. He was a four-year letterman in track and a two-year letterman in cross country at Miami (Ohio) University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1949. He completed a master’s degree at the University of Illinois in 1950. He began his career teaching math and physical education in 1950 at Cleveland John Adams High School. During his ten years at the school, as the track/field and cross country coach, he led his teams to victory in two state championships in each of these sports. In 1960 he came to Bowling Green State University and would serve twenty five years as cross country coach and twenty seasons as head coach of the men’s track program. During his tenure he coached fifty-three Division I All-Americans, one Olympic gold medalist (Dave Wottle), one world record-holder (Dave Wottle), three American event record-holders, and ninety-two Mid-American Conference champions. He was active in many aspects of his sport at the state, national, and international level through such organizations as the Mid-American Conference, the Track and Field Association, the Ohio Association of Track Coaches, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the United States Track Coaches Association among others. Brodt received numerous honors, including induction into the Ohio Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1970, the Ohio Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1984, the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988, and the U.S. Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002 just prior to his death December 17, 2002. Scope and Content	The Mel Brodt Collections is a comprehensive record of the growth and development of the BGSU Track /Field and Cross Country program during his tenure as coach from 1960-1985. Historically he has been remembered as the coach of 1972 Olympic gold medalist Dave Wottle for whom this collection contains a selection of clippings, photographs, and competition documentation. The bulk of Brodt’s papers is comprised of files. Foremost among these being his Track/Field and Cross Country Files in which researchers are provided both a yearly portrait of the program in his annual review as well as a specific recap of a particular event or meet documented in separate files for each month of any given year. Brodt maintained unbelievably detailed records about most aspects of any event in which his athletes participated. In the BGSU Track and Cross Country Program Files are coaching and track records of historic interest to the university. Those wishing to know more about Brodt’s professional career at BGSU would want to consult his Data Files in which he documents all his annual activities, memberships, and committee responsibilities. Copies of his articles, conference papers, speeches, and remarks may be found here. Those interested in knowing about his involvement in the broader track/field and Cross Country community at the state, national, and international levels will want to examine his Committee Files and his Track Competition Abroad Coaching Files. Throughout the collection Brodt’s instruction and coaching philosophy is well documented especially in his Teaching Files where he maintained a considerable amount of information about a myriad of relevant topics in his field. For individuals studying books and instructional materials in this field, a selection of texts from 1925 to 1976 offers an historic overview of how track/field and cross country education has developed over the years. Of special note are the Navy Department training volumes for the V-5 program. These would be useful for those researching the training of military personnel during the WWII era.

Includes such documents as by-laws, meeting agenda, minutes, correspondence, printed materials for committees on which Brodt served at the state and national level. TRACK AND FIELD FILES - BGSU 1950-1980 Arranged chronologically These files include both a general overview of the season and individual folders for each of the track/field meets , championships, and events. Earlier scorebooks were kept separately with the files then later were incorporated into the general folders with such documentation as correspondence, a track and field review (annual report), season schedule, workout schedules, training programs, guidelines, athlete rosters, event rosters, results, records set, brochures, printed materials, clippings. Individual meet folders contain similar data with more attention focused on the specific meet/event results, rankings, rosters, forms, itineraries, travel arrangements, printed materials, clippings, and photos . CROSS COUNTRY FILES - BGSU 1960-1985 Arranged chronology These files are comprised of similar documentation to the Track and Field Files with both general folders focused on the cross country season in summary and specific folders for various meets or events during the year. TEACHING FILES 1959-1986 Arranged alphabetically by subject and specific course These coaching and instruction files include student class papers, articles, clippings, sample tests, and various instructional materials used by Brodt in training individuals for careers within track/field and cross country athletic programs and perhaps for athletes needing assistance with their athletic performance. BGSU TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM FILES 1923-1983 scattered Arranged by subject These reference materials include team workouts, schedules, rosters, eligibility documents, correspondence, forms, historic data about university coaching and track records set, recruitment letters, Dave Wottle and Sid Sink meet participation documents and personal data about their athletic performance. BGSU ATHLETIC FILES 1969-1986 scattered Arranged by subject These reference materials include department athletic policy documents, manuals, committee assignments, task force materials, and items relevant to Brodt’s participation in the department and working within the school of Health Physical Education and Recreation. TRACK COMPETITION ABROAD COACHING FILES 1972-1985 Arranged by subject This is a record of some of Brodt’s international coaching experience during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and as coach of the U.S. Track Team in Leningrad in 1976. Correspondence, itineraries, travel arrangements, Brodt biographies, printed materials, are included. Data about other Ohio and Michigan university track programs may be found here as well. PAN-AMERICAN JUNIOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP FILES 1976-1980 Arranged by subject Includes correspondence, forms, and printed materials pertinent to Brodt’s participation as Head Coach for the first USA national junior team that competed at the Pan-American Games in Sudbury, Ontario in August 1980. NATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD HALL OF FAME FILES 1973-1985 Arranged by type of record The files can include meeting agenda, minutes, constitution, by-laws, correspondence, information about nominees, printed materials, photos, and miscellaneous information regarding other sports halls of fame. BRODT DATA FILES 1953-1983 Arranged chronologically This is an annual record of Brodt’s professional accomplishments and includes correspondence, articles, papers, and speeches by him, articles written about him or his athletes, memberships, committee activities, highlights of the track or cross country seasons, awards, certificates, and some photos. LITERARY PRODUCTIONS BRODT’S JOHN ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL TRACK NOTEBOOK 1951-1961 Arranged by type of record This notebook was apparently kept as a record of Brodt’s coaching responsibilities at John Adams High School in Cleveland, Ohio. It contains lists of athletes, track records, budgets, printed materials, and photos. BRODT ARTICLES 1963-1985 Arranged chronologically In addition to the articles, conference papers, and speeches included in the Brodt Data Files are these articles written by him and a log/journal he kept during a 1981 USAFE Trip. The Brodt testimonial dinner guest book and data about a Dave Wottle biography by Jim Ferstle are also included here. Of special interest are two track and field publications by the U.S. Navy for training military personnel in the V-5 program.
