Agency History | At some point in time between 1917 and 1919, a small group of Toledo Kappa Alpha Theta alumnae assembled to complete some sewing for the University of Michigan collegiate chapter. As these women met, they felt a need to form a Toledo Alumnae Chapter. In 1922, the Toledo Theta Club was established. On June 28, 1940, a Charter was granted and the installation of the Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta was held. The Toledo Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta became involved in many philanthropies throughout the community. The Miami Children's Center has become a main focus for the local Thetas. The goals of the Toledo Alumnae Chapter are: "To encourage more Thetas in the area to attend at least one meeting or participate in one of our activities; To provide fun and friendship for area alumnae through a varied program of activities; To have fundraising projects that are adequate to support our local and national philanthropic activities; To foster an atmosphere for members to build and renew Theta friendships; and, To develop qualities of leadership within the group." The Chapter continues in these activities today. |
Scope and Content | The Toledo Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta collection contains records dating from 1922 to 1993. Of research interest are the bylaws and minutes which include information on the Chapter's organization, activities, projects and policies. The minutes date from 1922 to 1993, however several gaps occur; between 1938 and 1942, 1944 and 1949, 1971 and 1973, and 1983 to 1993. Histories of the Chapter written by members are also very helpful to the researcher. Correspondence, scattered throughout the early years and more complete from 1969 to 1986, is largely from the Chapter officers to members. The subject files contain specific information about the Chapter's community and philanthropic activities, in particular, the Miami Children's Center. These files date from the 1960s-1970s. Also included in the subject files are rush recommendations and reports, and Founders' Day programs. Chapter, officer and committee reports which date from the 1940s through the 1970s, provide details on the duties and activities of the Chapter, its officers and such committees as the sewing committee, local projects committee and special events committee. Illustrating activities and functions of the district and national offices of Kappa Alpha Theta are the reports from the District, Grand Conventions, and Panhellenic Council. These reports also date from the 1940s through the 1970s. The Chapter's treasurer's reports provide information on the income and expenses incurred by the Chapter in implementing their goals and objectives and these date from 1958 to 1981. More general information about the Chapter can be found in the yearbooks (1936-1986), scrapbooks (1940-1980), newsclippings (1945-1993), newsletters and news releases (1957-1993). A few photographs and negatives are included which document Founders' Day activities and community projects. |
