Introduction | The records for The Women Alive! Coalition were donated to the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green State University by the Young Women’s Christian Association on June 11, 1986. The records of this organization consist of minutes, membership rosters, correspondence, programs and activities, marketing and publicity materials, photographs, and two radio recordings. Preliminary work on the collection was begun by Ann Bowers and finished by Mallory Jagodzinski in partial fulfillment for the graduate course in Archives Administration in the spring semester of 2013. |
Agency History | The Women Alive! Coalition operated under the guidance of the Toledo Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). The Women Alive! Coalition began in 1985 with the planning of the March 1986 Women Alive celebration by several women’s area organizations and clubs to highlight the roles and achievements of women during the 1986 Women’s History Week (March 2-March 8). During its operating years, the Coalition was composed of several committees that gave it a purpose focused on breadth and depth. Several such committees were the women’s history committee, the records committee, the roles and achievements committee, and the program and events committee. One of the most significant contributions the Coalition made to Northwest Ohio is the book series In Search of Our Past: Women of Northwest Ohio. In Search of Our Past was put together by the Women’s History Committee which researched significant area women and compiled their biographies into an 11 book series, with the final publication released in March 2011. The CAC has notes and photocopies used in the very early installments in the series. |
Scope and Content | Much of the records in this collection come from the early years of the organization, with sporadic documents from the 1990s. The majority of the records from the mid to late 1980s is complete and is a thorough accounting of the organization’s development. However, the minutes of larger Coalition meetings from the 1990s are not present with the exception of the minutes from September 1997. Minutes for the various committees are similarly sporadic with some committees being better represented than others. |
