Scope and Contents

The Jeanette Boyer Link photograph collection consists of approximately 325 film negatives, 50 glass plates, and 20 photographic prints dating from around 1910 through 1955. The photographs primarily show the Bellevue, Ohio area, but include some views of activities of the Albert Link Family in Defiance, Ohio, 1913 Flood pictures, agricultural activity around Bellevue, and some photographs of the Detroit Yacht Club and yachting.

Conditions Governing Access

All negatives within the nitrate film negatives series (over 200 negatives) are available only as digital surrogates (see Separated Materials note for more information). Please consult CAC staff for access to digital representations of these negatives. No special access conditions apply to the remainder of the collection.

Arrangement

For ease of navigation in this finding aid, the collection has been intellectually arranged into five series based on the photographic media of the items. These series include glass plate negatives, acetate film negatives, nitrate film negatives, copy film negatives, and prints. However, in the collection itself, the items are arranged sequentially by item number.

Separated Materials

In 2018, CAC staff determined that over two hunded film negatives from this collection consisted of a cellulose nitrate film base, making them particularly prone to deterioration despite standard archival interventions, and presenting a damage risk to the entire Jeanette Boyer Link photograph collection due to the inherent instabiliy of cellulose nitrate film. In order to both preserve the integrity of the nitrate negatives and to mitigate the risk of damage to the full collection, the nitrates were digitized at high preservation-level fidelity in order to capture faithful representations of the original images, and all original nitrate negatives were discarded following appropriate environmental and safety protocols. These nitrate negatives therefore no longer exist in their original formats, and are available only as digital surrogates.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred to the Center for Archival Collections through the cooperation of the William Oddo, on February 2, 1990.
