Scope and Contents

Among the responsibilities various county offices and local jurisdictions was maintaining records related to taxable property. In that capacity the county was in charge of conducting property assessments, which sometimes included maps and plats. This collection includes both printed and hand-drawn maps of townships and local jurisdictions used by county offices and by other entities such as utilities and road building. Showing acreage and names of owners, some of the maps show physical features of the landscape, such as marshes, bogs, sandbars, and streams. The collection also includes other administrative maps such as school and sewage districts and voting districts, and historical topical maps compiled by Lyle Fletcher for the Wood County Historical Society. All the maps are rolled and labeled and are stored in tubes in an oversize box. Maps of townships are first (not all townships are represented), separated from maps of smaller local jurisdictions.
