The Lucy Neff was a wooden vessel built at West Bay City, Michigan in 1893 as the W.P. Ketcham; renamed the Lucy Neff in 1902 and served in the coastal trade; foundered during a storm on December 17, 1915. This logbook details a difficult voyage from Detroit San Francisco, winter-over for repairs in Maine, and another voyage down the coast and to California, covering 1907-1908.

Abstract

Six audio tapes of interviews of seasonal workers at Mackinac Island (1990) and the resulting research paper prepared for an independent study course in the Department of Popular Culture, Bowling Green State University.

Scope and Contents The collection is comprised of financial records of the Mackinac Transportation Company. Materials mainly consist of paid bills, checks, and a ledger of account. These records provide insight into the day-to-day logistics of running a shipping company in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Abstract

The collection contains transcripts, exhibits, and supplementary items from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation convened on November 18, 1975, eight days after the EDMUND FITZGERALD sank in Lake Superior with her entire crew of twenty-nine men. The purpose of the inquiry was to determine the causes of the tragedy and to examine safety procedures. Indexes are available for exhibits and testimony in addition to an index for each of the seven volumes of the transcript.

The bulk of the collection is made up of 269 color photographs of Great Lakes vessels taken by Mark Shumaker from circa 1995-2013. A number of duplicates are present. The balance of the collection consists of Excel spreadsheets detailing the cargo carried on the BLUE RIVER from 1949-1960. Accompanying photographs of the original trip records in Shumaker's possession complement the summary data. Also present is the photographed log for the CARTIERDOC for 1957.

Log of a ship owned by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, possibly written by B.H. Otten while in training on a merchant vessel during World War I with the U.S. Naval Auxiliary Reserves; includes numerous sketches of the Marquette and notes on seamanship along with some printed pamphlets. Ship originally built for the Dearborn Transit Company as the E.L. WALLACE and operated by them between 1906 and 1915.
