The Joseph Payne Brennan Papers consist of the manuscript for his story "The Temple of the Living Dead", which was published in Midnight Sun vol.2, no.2 August 1976. This journal was published by Gary Hoppenstand and is in the Browne Popular Culture Library's fanzine Collection. This manuscript was transferred to the collection by the author in 1989.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Payne Brennan (1918-1990) was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on December 20, 1918. He was a distinguished poet and author of fantasy and supernatural fiction. He was one of the last memorable names to emerge from Weird Tales before its first demise in 1954. From 1957-1976, he published his own fantasy magazine Macabre. He published several collections of poems and several collections of short stories in the supernatural and fantasy genres. He also wrote several volumes of tales centered on the adventures of his psychic detective, Lucius Leffing.

In addition to his writing career, Joseph Payne Brennan worked as an Acquisitions Assistant at the Sterling Memorial Library of Yale University for over 40 years.

Joseph Payne Brennan died in 1990.
